904 shifting problem? - 11/30/11 04:21 PM

In january i put in a brand new 904trans in my car. so far ive been happy but now it doesnt have second gear. There is no horrible noise whenit trys to shift it just doesnt grab second but it will shift from first to third. Would this be a valve body prob?

front band adjustment and sounds like the throttle pressure linkage was mis adjusted.

I have had this a few times(kiled a lot of 904s),adjust the front band and 2nd should come back. it is an outside adjustment so you wont need to drop the pan unless you want to check pan for trash and do the revs band at the same time.

then make sure you get the TP linkage adjusted correctly.

good luck

thanks a million would i be better of to just throw in a 727 when this one shells itself? Or do you think it will hold up fine Im seventeen and have a very heavy foot. Just have a stock 360 crate motor.

Unless the 904 was built specifically to go behind a 360 crate motor I'm not surprised you are having issues . Try adjusting the band , hopefully you have not destroyed the band yet.

You might want to look at putting a 727 behind it .

a bone stock 904 is very ez to kill with a heavy foot.

loose 2nd,adjust band,bark 2nd,lose 2nd,adjust band,bark 2nd,lose 2nd,adjust band...look for replacement,find 727 replacement,one good pass and 904 is done,R&R it and upgrade to 727..shortn drive shaft

i have done it many times with 904/998/999 weak links

thorttle pressure rod is very important and needs adjusted correctly for any auto to last.

As far as 904's go if built right they can hold up extremely well to racing and strong street use and are minimum 2 tenths quicker than 727's. I have built a lot of these for friends in racing 2 of which run 9's and 10's and pull their wheels past the 60 foot mark. I have never had one come apart. If you use the proper stock internals and good clutches they will hold. 727's are great in heavy cars or trucks with big blocks but in a small car such as an A body or older B body with a small block the 904 is my choice.

Adj the kickdown/solve the prob then you'll be in a neutral frame of mind to decide if you have enough power where a (727) upgrade is justified

Without the proper valve body and governor parts a 727 won't last much longer than a 904. I'd be willing to bet you are having to manually shift the 1-2 shift, which is hard on any trans with a stock v/body. The nose over, or overlap from the low/reverse band being applied and not releasing before the kickdown (2 nd gear) band applies is where the damage occurs - in effect it is in 2 gears at once.

My advice is after the kickdown band is adjusted is to either install a manual v/body, or a good shift kit to make the trans shift correctly, and use the governor to adjust the shift RPM's.

Okay a little bit worried now. Ive adjusted the front band 74in/lb in then two turns out and it still aint workin as advertised. So is this a good sign that my tranny is hosed?

You need to pull the pan and check to make sure the band is actually still hooked up. I have seen misadjusted bands come unhooked before. There is an extension arm that connects the band to the lever at the servo. I have seen these arms come undone. If so you will need to reconnect this assembly and then adjust the band accordingly. If it is still hooked then you need to do a check of the servo circuit to see if it works or not. I always do this first before doing band adjustments. Also when built right a 904 can be a very strong tranny. I have built them behind numerous 9 second engines.
