Adjusting valves, Go/No Go gauge

Adjusting valves, Go/No Go gauge - 11/29/11 08:22 PM

There are a couple threads running about valve adjustment right now & I could have stuck this in one of those but it deserves separate billing..

I saw in one of the other thread a comment that really surprised me... So I'm throwing this out there..

What do you consider the proper amount of drag on a feeler gauge when setting valves.. Should it be a light pull or moderately heavy?

Should you be able to force a .002 thicker gauge through the gap...

What are your thoughts?

i prefer a light drag (not loose) and from the side only, never roll under a roller rocker.

Makes a difference weather its a roller rocker or
not... roller rocker its easier to get the feeler
in there... not roller I use medium to light but
has to have drag

Years ago one of the west coast Mopar drag race Guru( Bob Hickman ) told me that he like to have the rockers tight enuogh where it took a lot of pressure from his fingers to push the feeler gauge in between the valve stem and rocker arm tip. The message is to set it tight and the same on all the rockers That goes hand in hand with using the same procedure for setting all the valves every time

Cab, that's the way I have always did it to. If the guage wont go in, it's too tight. If you can slide it in, there's still more room. It isn't like your squishing the feeler gauge when manually pushing it in. Never had a problem

I just hope I can adjust mine so you don't hear the rattle like they were before the push rod broke and I will be replacing the rods when they come in, hopefully in the morning. Then I can adjust the valves set the timing and find out if all is ok. I bought the car to restore and have just now got it running.
The last time I adjusted valves was a 64 Chevy SS and you would back them off till they rattled and then tighten it down till it stopped. That seemed really easy.
Anyway we will so what happens.

This is how I was taught many years ago, I was taught that when you set for a light drag oil trapped between the cam & lifter, lifter & pushrod, pushrod & rocker plus rocker & valve all can effect the true clearance versus your light drag.... There is a feeler gauge available called a go/no go gauge, the last 3/4" of the tip is ground .002 thinner than the rest of the blade... The thin area of the blade is the "Go" portion of the blade .. The thicker area is the "No Go" portion of the blade..

The idea being you can't force the no/go step into the area where the go area fits... If it fits then the setting is to loose..

I've used the same set of Go/No Go gauges for the past 30 years, I always put a few drops of oil on them before putting them in the case... Always take good care of a good tool...

FWIW Prior to learning this method I would often have a valve that even though it had just been adjusted still would be noisier than the rest.. Not anymore.. Just my technique FWIW..
