Mine worked for 6months with a mechanical pump. I had it set at 6.5 lbs. It left me stranded and on a rollback. After I found out it was dropping to 2 lbs after running for 15 minutes I removed it and put in a lower pressure pump.

just asking, using a non liquid filled gauge right? any heat from the engine will screw up the liquid filled gauges,in my experience

Yes, its none liquid filled. And feel free to ask away. I'm at a lose.
Might just have to spend a little and try a different brand
I have also checked it with a second gage to verify.

are you sure you dialing it the correct way to lower the psi?

I tried turning it out first because as memory served (not saying its any good) thats what I recalled but didn't have any luck so I tried turning the adjuster screw in just to see what would happen and once the pressure hit about 10 psi I was making the mad dash for the cab to shut it off lol. After all that I finely pulled out the instructions (that have been laying on my work bench for 3 months now) and its counter clockwise to lower pressure.

I questioend myself at first to

Update......
got new regulator and still over pressuring. Only thing I can think from this point is pump is putting out more pressure then regulator can handle and the pressure relief on the pump isn't dumping back into the tank like its suppose to- so time to lift the bed and pull the pump (full tank of fuel).

full tank of fuel..yep,sound like the way i would have to do it as well.

you running a stock TBI intake pump?

not sure what reg you have, post a pic of it if you could

I don't have a picture and my wife has the camera with her at the inlaws but this is the regulator http://www.holley.com/12-803.asp

And yes I'm running the stock in tank tbi pump.

I got thinking, what are the chances I got two bad regulators? So I put a pressure gage in front of the new regulator and one behind it. As I said before first hit is 18-20 psi then it settled to 11.5 psi (truck not running so battery getting low) and it held it 23 min consistently feeding the regulator. So I'm thinking the pump is ok.

After the regulator I was getting 10.5 to 11 psi and it didn't matter how I set the adjuster screw(my pressure gage has a pressure relief on it). I called the local all knowing checkers guy and he say's it should hold that pressure just fine and will warranty it again. It wont be here until tuesday

If this doesn't work I think I will go with a bypass style regulator and run the old return line back to the tank.

What do you think?

looks like the one I have with my holley blue pump knockoff.

I am feeding it with a 1/2" line with 2-3/8 lines, one to carb, one for return.

this reg is not intended for a return line so I added a restrictor in the return line,i have 2 gauges and they both hold a steady 5 psi with pump on.

the stock intank pump is a high psi pump and may need to have a working return line like stock.

may just need the right reg

What are you using for a restrictor in your return line? I was thinking of trying some kind of restrictor but haven't come up with anything I'm comfortable with yet. I need to run up to the local home depot and have a brain crunching in the brass fitting section

Re: Anyone have problems with Holley 12-803 fuel Regulator? - 11/27/11 01:00 AM

I have a 90* fitting right off the reg,i used a #2 philps bit inside the fitting(wont go thru the 90* bend)

it restrics it down at least 75% i would think.

with out it,it has no psi on that side and free flows,it does keep 5 psi on the other side, but not sure when driveing as I cant see the gauges

last one I saw converted with the stock intake pump had the regulator from RobbMc it was a deadhead or by-pass unit,,not sure if its fits your budget though

I also have one of those purolator regs that has a hand dial and is 5/16 outlets with hose barbs.

not sure if it would handle the intank pump

Thats some good engineering, and I have all that on hand. I just got to thinking while I was typing this I think I might have a shut off valve out there that should allow me to adjust the the restriction in theory

Thanks for the help buddy

Ok I lost pressure again so I decided to open the tank and find out just what was up and found a ton of dirt in the tank and on the screen of the pump. I think I finely found the irregular pressures, now if I just clean the tank and sreen the pump should start working consistently. I will also use a return line to fix the regulator problem

Wrong photo.

This one is of the sediments in the tank but the pic doesn't do it justice.
I gess this is what you get from a used truck that someone else has "taken care of"

what did you do with the tank full of gas?

I bet that is the trouble and you are on the way to fixing it now.

Re: Anyone have problems with Holley 12-803 fuel Regulator? - 11/28/11 08:38 AM

I took my electric fuel pump and put a filter on it to filter the fuel coming out of the tank as I pumped it into gas cans. When this is all done I have a commercial grade pump and filter that I will pump it back into the tank with just so that I can give it one more filtration just to be sure. Kind of an over kill but that pic doesn't do the crap in the tank justice.

Once I get this all taken care of I will go back to trying your bypass regulator trick.

my elect pump and holley reg always read high without the motor running.

What type pump are you running, are you running a return line?
And are you running the 12-803?

I'm running the stock tbi in tank pump and about three months ago when I made the tbi swap to carb I had set the regulator without the alt producing (thought it was but had a bad volt reg) and I had the pressure right on the money but when I got the alt going it seemed to kick the pump in high gear and shot my pressure throw the roof so I had to readjust the pressure back down.

Now that could have been from a low battery and the alt comped for that after the fact

How many of you have opened a fuel tank and found grass and what looks like cat hair in the tank- rase your hands?

Maybe it upped the octane levels what do you think?
