BB Rear Main Seal - 11/19/11 02:49 PM

Guys,

Can the rear main seal be changed with the motor in the car? Motor is a BB400 with 727 auto tranny. The oil pan and steering linkage are dropped...

Thanks!!

Ok I went ahead and got the Fel Pro rubber set. Any suggestions as to which sealant to use (if any) to make sure it's sealed up nice 'n good?

Thanks!!

I suggest offsetting the seal in the retainer and block at least a quarter of an inch so that the parting line of the seal and retainer are in a different position.

Is your 400 leaking oil from the main seal? Mine is. I remember hearing that many people put the seal in wrong, what is the trick?

i put a rear main seal in my 68'dodge coronet, 440/727, i could not get the rubber seals to work, i had to wind up using the old rope seal, it work fine, i had to drop the center link to get the oil pan to come out.

Lip toward the inside (oil side) of the pan <-} So that any oil or internal pressures push the lips outward to contribute to a better seal.
