Why can't i mount a msd blaster 2 horizontal?

Why can't i mount a msd blaster 2 horizontal? - 11/18/11 05:10 PM

Hey all, Who says you can't mount a oil filled blaster 2 coil horizontal? Hard to believe that this is true. Is a stock coil not oil filled?
Has any body run the msd blaster 2 on the stock intake mount and how long has it worked for you any problems ?
Thanks for the help Cj.

Re: Why can't i mount a msd blaster 2 horizontal? - 11/18/11 05:15 PM

PER MSD it depends on which part number you have.

The Blaster Coil is designed to mount in most factory canister coil mounts. MSD also offers a Chrome
Coil Bracket, PN 8213. It is recommended to mount the PN 8202 and 8223 coils in an upright position.
The High Vibration Coil, PN 8222, can be mounted in any position due to its epoxy potting compound

Key words -It is recommended -does not say you have to

Got a call from a buddy just theother day about his new coil leaking oil....

Yes OE coils are oil filled but apparently the technology to seal the coil has beed lost...

No don't mount the oil filled coil horizontal it will leak... What's BS is the fact that it isn't sealed, if they could seal a coil in the 50's there is no excuse to the low quality stuff they pawn off on us these days...

I had a blaster 2 mounted horizontally on a CH4B and never had an issue, I bought it maybe 6 years ago. I did paint it black, I doubt the paint acted as a sealant but who knows.

I have had the blaster 2 coil mounted horizontally on my cuda for over 10 years. No problem at all.

Mounted mine horizontally....I was driving to Vegas from LA 4 years ago...guess when it decided to start leaking, overheat and fail on me?

I was stuck in Victorville at 4am...waiting in front of Pep Boys for 4 hours waiting for them to open to buy a new coil....Don't mount it sideways...

Ma got by w it. You're financially strapped, I'd do it (horizontle) & carry a spare & not give it a seconds thought

The older MSD coils were sealed.. They have cheapened the product..

Several years back in a conversation w Don at FBO he was telling me that since (some I'm assuming) of MSD's stuff is made overseas now that there was a very subtle change in the MSD sticker/logo on the coil I believe. I have an 8202 I think & I should give it a good visual & see if I can tell

What are the alternatives? Does a hotter coil really make any difference with the mopar ECU? What would be the best parts jobber unit out there?

Actually the ECU is pretty much just a (coil pri) switch and keeps a constant 42 degrees of dwell. the real power is in coil/ballast selection and the best is an no ballast full 12V E coil and a common parts house 4 pin Mopar replacement ECU or better is a '75 350 chebby HEI OE module or an aftermarket HEI module if OK w non Mopar stuff and can mount the HEI on an alum plate w dielectric grease under the dist hidden as all cheby parts should be. Then dial the dist initial (vac ga method)/total/springs/vac adv IN ORDER and you'll have a killer setup & note "initial" and "total" set w vac adv disconnected/plugged

So is there a warning on the MSD package for the store display, shipping, storage, etc., ???

I have one older MSD Blaster that's been on a CHB4 intake manifold horizontal for 7 years now with no problem but as you said the older ones were not a problem.....I have a new one in the "blister" pack that's been laying on its side for five months now in the shop ........yikes gotta run and check it out and see if the oil is leaking

How do we know which ones might leak?

Hughes has a little L bracket that mounts the coil vertically.

Call Don at FBO & in the meantime go from the prob to the solution w a bracket like Andy's

No I'll need to buy another brand or type of higher performance than stock coil that mounts horizontal. Used it because I wanted it to look stock in the past and was going to use it on the GTX for the same reason. This is an older MSD Blaster on my '68 rr painted black, on an Edelbrock aluminum CHB4, (Edelbrock and numbers ground off ) with an electronic distributor with the ECU mounted inside under the dash and the ECU wiring run inside of the stock wiring harness and through the bulkhead junction (red wire). That's a Holley SA under there with a nice cam and kind of stock looking. Doing the same with the '69 GTX so I need to figure out if the MSD Blaster I have now will work?

Careful, the terminals on the new 8202 Blasters are junk too.

I barely tightened the + wire on mine and it broke and stripped the threads.

$40 down the toilet!

Car runs fine with an old black Chrysler coil.

That's pretty cool. Will it fit under a 70-72 B-body Air Grabber 383/400 or 440 air cleaner base?

Hello
MSD get it together...$250 for dist. $175 for control box (AL-6). Top line stuff. I agree on that.
Then a coil that leaks??
Where is your Quality???
Why do we settle for this??

According to MSD tech forums a coil mounted sideways may run to hot since not all the coils will be submersed in cooling oil. I just got a dry Blaster SS that I plan on mounting today.
