two questions on a 360 magnum - 11/14/11 07:08 AM

Question 1: Are the internals in a 360 magnum the same as the internals in a LA360? EXE: are the cams / pistons ect. interchangeable?

Question 2: I am on a tight budget and want to get the most bang for my buck i want to turbo it in the end but cant afford it all at once what are some of yalls HO 360 magnum builds?

Q1) yes and no. same bore, same crank casting, but slightly lighter rods with narrower small ends, different pistons with metric rings. but you can buy aftermarket pistons (say, KB107's) and put them in. cams are roller cams, flat tappet cams can be run with a change in pushrods, or the roller cam can be reground/replaced with another roller cam. roller lifters can be reused if in good shape.

the original 380HP crate motor wsa a standard truck magnum with different valve springs, cam, and single plane intake.

tight budget and turbo build do not go together.

you're gonna want an all new bottom end to throw boost at it, all forged parts, which will run as much as building a 408 stroker. then you're gonna need heads, exhaust, intake, and then all the turbo stuff.

you could get up into the 375-400 hp range with a cam swap on a stock truck 360.

if you want more power than that, then consider simply swapping pistons for around $250, plus a balance job, new pistons will bump your compression up to around 10.5:1, then step up to edelbrock heads, and you'll be able to hit 450-500 hp with a stock stroke 360, the right cam, and RPM to get there.

cheaper and easier than a turbo, and if you do go turbo, you're gonna be limited by the stock block to about 650 hp.

Has anyone got specs on a ideal 360 build?

depends on car weight, rear gear, what you want to do as far as driving (1/4 mile at a time, or highway trips), etc.

like patrick said, how are you gonna use it?!

but, assuming a street cruiser, weekend toy in a car...

my ideal build would look like this:

KB Hypereutectic pistons, domed w/valve reliefs std bore or .020/.030 if your block needs it. $250

Eagle forged rods $230

Stock cast crank -- free

Balance job, crank polish, etc. ~$200

Rings $60

that gives you a bottom end good for about 10.5:1 compression and good for probably 500 hp for less than a grand. or if you need block work, then maybe you'll end up at $1500-2000

some $1500 edelbrock heads

intake/headers/carb/cam of your choice, and you've got a 450-ish Hp small block for less than the price of the "380hp small block crate motor"

if you plan on a piston swap, I'd go KB107's, they're flat tops, set them for 0 deck, .039" fel pro head gasket, and 63ccish heads yield about 10.6:1.

I'd reuse the stock rods with new bolts, reuse the stock crank.

if your heads are usable, use hughes #1110 springs and their retainers. have a valve job done, opening the seats up to 1.9/1.605" (the stock VJ is undersized), open the pushrod pinch up some, and do some bowl blending. if your heads are unusable, I'd get some enginequest 318B's or some RHS's from either hughes or Brian at IMM.

intake, I'd use an edelbrock air gap

I'd use 1 5/8" headers

cam, I'd look for a roller in the 220-224@.050 duration, with about .340" lobe lift max. I'd probably use stock rockers for now.

I'd probably see if the stock cam can be reground by bullit cams using their HR274/340 lobe for both intake and exhaust.

I'd wager it would be an honest 370-410hp depending on carb and how well the heads are prepped.

My plans are on the street but I would like to be able to put some decent numbers down at the track if I wanted. As far as budget I have about 1000 now and about 200-300 a month to use to build it up so I need to get the internals first and headers and such I can add as I get funds! Thanks for the depots so far I am new at this and need all the help I can get!!!
