Turn Signals freeze at low idle

Turn Signals freeze at low idle - 11/12/11 01:50 PM

I've been dealing with this for a while, i usually stick my foot on the gas pedal a little so people can see that I am turning when stopped.

When i am sitting still, its like the rpm's are too low to power the relay? The turn signals will just stay on (not flashing) unless you rev it a little higher.

Could this be a simple flasher relay? Ive never had this in any other old mopars.....

its in my 71 Challenger

What does your electrical load look like, stock? Sounds like maybe a combo of the expected low rpm charging and some resistance due to age may be dropping the voltage to the flasher enough to keep from operating.

Yes it is your old mechanical flasher, get a new electronic one and it will flash faster at low volts.

I agree get one of the new electronic flasher.I had the same problem with my 58 Harley. One was so slow that they pretty much stayed on another they flashed super fast.Put the new one in and they are perfect.Have one in my 65 Plymouth also.Great part for about 10 bucks.Rocky

Yes, you have to look hard to find a mechanical one now a days. They are the super cheap one's and no new cars use them anymore.

Thanks for the info. Didn't know they were all electronic nowadays as I've never bought one as I've always used ones from harnesses laying around and I have a very slow one that I want to speed up

Thanks guys!

I will go out for a new one.

One day i will pull the car back apart and do wiring the right way, etc. I am sure there is extra load somewhere as well.
