Hood problem

Hood problem - 11/05/11 04:49 AM

Sorry for such a basic question, but after I close my hood, why do I always have to push the back of the hood down to get it to be flush with the fenders? (Back by the cowl, that is).

This is a '70 Challenger, AMD bulge hood and stock springs.

I was having that same problem with my 1971 'Cuda. Stock hood and 40 year old stock hinges. I bought a new set of hinges that I hope will fix this.

If someone knows a better way, let us both know...

Here's a post. I haven't put my hood back on to try it yet.

This has been a problem with several "Open Cowl" type hoods. Think of the 70-81 Camaro/Firebirds, the mid 70s impalas, Monte carlos, GM trucks....
Its likely in the adjustment of the hood to hinge bolts.

I don't think what he is talking about is a hinge installation adjustment problem. I think it is more of a worn out hinge problem.

In my case, the hinges have been on my car for 40 years. They had never been replaced. I really didn't even notice it myself. A friend pointed it out to me because it was happening to his car also. If you close the hood all the way shut, the back corner would have about 1/2 inch sticking up. I would just push down on the corner and it would stay down and not pop back up while driving or anything. This only happened on my back left side. I am hoping new hinges will fix the problem. This is NOT an installation adjustment problem. At least not how I read the original post.

Only two ways for this to happen. One: at least one mounting bolt is lose on the hinge. Two: the hinge pivots are badly worn.
Tighten all bolts, if it still does it you need a new hinge.

Thanks. This has happened ever since I bought the car, but then I took it to a shop to swap gears, and when I got it back it was even worse. The rear of the hood will now stick up a good 2 inches until I push it down!
I will check the hinges and maybe try the adjustment from Resto Rick.

Try the adjustment, you might be surprised & it doesn't cost a dime...

And if the adjustment does'nt work then have RestoRick rebuild your 70 hinges...Repops are the 71-74 style...

I got my old hinges off. I have not installed my new hinges yet because not everything is painted. I think that I have a pretty good idea why the hood was acting that way, at least on my car.

If you look at the hinge on the left, the teeth are really worn out. The hinge on the right was acting just fine and you can tell the difference.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I am trying to determine if rebuilding or new AMD is the way to go, pricewise.
