Who is real good setting up six pack carbs ? - 11/05/11 12:57 AM

Well....I have not had good luck with Holley carburetors but I don't have a choice if I want to have a six pack...unless I go fuel injection and that is a little too expensive for me at this time.
The six pack that I had on my 440 ran real well (stock set up-rebuilt) but I had it flood over a few times on occasion. They seamed to not stay in tune and I thought they were rich...

I'd replace the needle/seat assys (good ones) and lubing the black rubber O ring integral to them before installing/dry set the float levels/check for float mechanism hanging up in it's range of travel/waterlogged float/idle psi too high/good filter. You might come away cheap

Does anyone know what size jets I should use in the carbs for a 383 with a mild cam (Lunati 60301)
supposed to have 19" of vacuum at idle

Some good information here in this thread and search for others on the sixpack here as well.

It's not hard ..I did mine. Never touched a set before. I'd stick w/ the stock jets..maybe go up a size. If you are pulling 15 at idle the factory 6.5 pv wil be fine. make sure the flaots are set right. then turn the idle screws in all the way in. Next turn them out 1.25 turns. start the car and run the idel up to 2400. UNHOOk the vac advance and set the timing in full at 38*. Turn the idle back down to 900, adjust the screws for best vaccum and go for a blast.

x2, you also don't mention how old or abused the carbs are. instead of doing what RR suggested, it might be time to just rebuild them. the kits are about $20 each (you need 3)and contain everything you need except a lower power valve which you will probably need once you pull a vacuum check. i think the kits come with a 6.5.

my kit was brand new. if you have an old set...by all means buy a rebuild kit. It's not hard. and when the outboards open it's like no 4bbl!

Yes, I know that they work real good...I have had one on a 440 before, it worked great...until it got something under a float and it would flood over. I also was using the old style cork gaskets and I seam to be replacing them a lot. I have seen the new gaskets to eliminate that problem.

Definitely DIY. I'm in the process of tuning my 440-6 with the help of several guys here. I have a bit bigger cam (Lunati 60303) and am using new repro carbs. I've had a few senior moments , but am learning a lot about these carbs and tuning in general.

I thought I read somewhere that the 340 carbs would perform better than the 440's on a 383....Forgot where I read it or why....but I pretty sure Ive heard this before.

Yes, I think I either read that in a magazine or on here some time ago. Anyone know if 340 carbs would work better than the 440 carbs?

Also check E-Bay for sixpack carbs. Sellers on ebay have the best prices by far for new sixpack carbs. Beware of USED worn out overpriced junk sixpack carbs with warped baseplates, worn out throttle shafts and stripped bowls. You can easily spend more having a used set fixed than a new set.

Well, I don't have the car ready anyway, I am just collecting parts so I have them to put it together.
