Questions about fan clutches

Questions about fan clutches - 10/31/11 10:52 PM

I have a couple of questions about fan clutches. First, are fan clutches interchangeable between engine sizes or are they designed for a specific application? I have a clutch from a 400 that I would like to use on a 360 if it is O.K. to do so. My second question is, what is the best way to clean up a fan clutch? The clutch from the 400 is fully functional but looks bad. It was real greasy which I have taken care of and now I would like to get the discoloration and some scaling off of it and then hopefully paint it. I would like to media blast it but I'm afraid the grit might get in where the shaft goes into the seal. I tried wire brushing it but that isn't working out too well when trying to get in between the fins. Any suggestions (other than sending it out to be restored or buying a new one)?

There's no real difference between the application of the fan clutches other than the length of the shaft. Too long of a shaft and your clutch will want to hit the rad. Too short and the fan will be too far away.

and the FSM said to replace with a know good one when trooble shooting to rule the fan out in any heating problem.

after haveing 2 lock up and shear the fan off on one taking the rad/hose/hood out.

I just get a new 440 HD max cooling termo clutch one from napa and add a 7 blade fan to it for all of my engine combos.

runs about 65$ last one I got

but I have cleaned a lot up in the past, just check to see if it wobbles while mounted on the WP pushing/pulling on the fan blades.

if the seal looks like it has leaked or the oil built up on it was not from the fan clutch itself, you have a 50-50 chance of no trouble out of it
