C-body owners: What makes a '70 Fury a Gran Coupe? - 10/20/11 04:02 PM

Trying to educate myself on a '70 Fury "Gran Coupe"....from what I gather it was a package on the 2-dr "post" body in 1970. Was it basically just a trim package? Hide-away headlights, etc? What all came with the package?

I don't know much about C-bodys....just trying to educate myself. thanks.

That's basically it - a value-priced Fury II with some trimmings. Was quite successful, it seems, but info is hard to come by.

Every GC I've ever seen has brown paint and brown paisley top and interior trimmings, and yes, they got the SF's hideaway headlights. I would speculate they are built on the F3 level and not F2, but

FWIW --
I saw a 71 Fury 4dr in a junkyard once, it had Gran Coupe badges on it, but it was beige. Yes - GC badges. I remember at hte time thinking it was odd. The 71 brochure here (http://www.fuselage.de/ply71/grancoupe.html) shows it as an F3 hardtop and no reference to a Gran Sedan. The 72 brochure, though, mentions a GS (http://www.fuselage.de/ply72/1.html).
The 72 GC is avaialable in 2 configurations, both hardtop-style, with a slight difference int eh roofline and quarterpanel. So if you need a 1/4-panel for a 72 Fury 2dr, you better make sure which one you need/get!

Pretty much as said above. The 70 was 2-door only & the post body. 383-2bbl motor standard & auto A/C optional. Came with Power Drum brakes. Mostly all T8 Walnut but I've heard a few have been seen White I think. Paisley Top & seat inserts & door panel inserts. Top was by Stauffer Chemical & my original was dated the same month as the car & the Replacement I got is dated 7 months later, same manufacturer.

For 71 the 2-dooor became a hardtop 7 the 4-door hardtop was introduced. The 360 became the standard engine & it got Disc brakes standard. Other colors too that year.

The '70 Gran Coupe was a PL21L0 - 383 2bbl Fury II (was the 383 4bbl OPTIONAL?)

In addition to the often seen FT8 - "walnut metallic" other colors were available.

Here's a BL1 - "sand pebble beige" version

Dan, I think you mean FT6, GT8 was a '71 color.

I have seen 1970s is FT6, BL1, and EW1. In 1971 I've seen them in GT8 and BL1, and EW1.

In 1971 the Gran Coupe was available in any Fury color. I'm not sure about the 1970. The Paisley top was an option, but only on certain colors.

I learned how to drive on my dad's brown 70 Gran Coupe. Smacked the fence a couple of times coming into the driveway.
He was the original owner and had all sorts of issues with the car. Leaked into the passenge footwell, dealership never managed to find it. Radio blew up once a year.
He got rid of it in '83. Guy who bought it cut the rear wheel wells open for huge ProTracs and had a velocity stack sticking out of the hood.

Do sort of miss the car now, but not back then (paisley ).

FT8 - "walnut metallic" was a '70 color
GT8 - "Tahitian walnut metallic" was a '71 color

I guess Plymouth wanted their boats to sound "tropical"?

My dad owned a 71'Gran Coupe 4-door hardtop. Paisley brown with matching top and interior,360,headlight washers etc.It was odd seeing "Gran Coupe" on the pillar with it being a 4-door.Lots of great memories in that car!

They call it a Formal Roof, I had a 71 Spinnaker White with brown paisley top and interior. Had 360 with hideway headlights with wiper/washer and factory fender skirts. Wish is hadn't sold it...

Cool thanks, I didn't see it listed as a Fury color.
