Performer RPM on a 440 under stock 69 RoadRunner hood?

Performer RPM on a 440 under stock 69 RoadRunner hood? - 10/19/11 08:24 PM

Hi: I ran the search function and found discussions on this general topic but did not see one directly dealing with my situation.

In my 69 Road Runner, I am going to replace my stock 383 engine with a 440. The 440 will have a Performer RPM intake and Edelbrock AVS 800cfm. I currently have a 383 fresh air intake assembly (I understand the base is taller than the 440 version). Any chance the 383 fresh air intake will fit under the standard steel, stock hood (without the fresh air box)? If not, will the 440 base or a drop base air cleaner fit? Any room for a carb spacer? Other ideas?

Any feedback on this manufacturer of fiberglass drop bases?

Thanks.

I don't know if this will help or not since I don't have an air grabber, but... I have a '69 Road Runner with a 440 and Edelbrock RPM intake, and the stock unsilenced air cleaner would definitely not fit. I had to go with an aftermarket drop air cleaner.

They hybrid fiberglass guy is a board member on here and I've heard nothing but good things about his products.

No the 383 air cleaner base will not fit under a stock hood, same goes for a 440 base. any intake other than a factory stock height intake on it's respective base engine block will require a drop base air cleaner and depending on the height of the intake posibbly a shorter than 3" hi element. Once you get into drop base units and short air filter elements you run into the possibly of restricting air flow into the primaries because of the choke air horn height .

not sure how it compares, but I had a Performer RPM on my 440 in a Superbird. Holley carb and the most "drop" drop base air cleaner I could find, then had to find an element with only about a 2" height.
This pic is the engine with the performer RPM, Holley carb, thick (about 0.2") carb gasket and the drop base air cleaner. This configuration rubbed the bottom of the stock (flat Coronet) hood, requiring me to find a thinner air filter.
Hope this helps.

That helps well as the hood is basically at the same height as the 69RR , maybe a 1/2" shorter.

How close is the top to the carb air horn with your 2" element?

Thanks for all the help. I am going to try the fiberglass drop base -- hopefully, the hood will close and the carb will get enough air. I am still a couple of months from completing the project, and fitting and closing the hood will be the last step, but I will post how things work out.

I would toss the performer rpm for the holley intake as it quite a bit lower solving most of you issue. My 440 runs even better with the holley intake frm low to high rpm with unreal midrange/topend power.
