Widest Tire on the Front of a 68/69 Roadrunner/Gtx? - 09/16/11 06:31 AM
Looking to replace my front tires and looking for information and real world experiance. I currently have 265-50-15 bfgs and they do not offer that size any longer. I know that there are a couple of other companys that sell that size but are not familiar with them and their quality. I have about 30,000 miles on my current tires that were installed 10 years ago. Would like to have the replacements be as wide as possible and a little taller than the 265-50 that is about 25.5" tall. My current rear tires for the street are 305-50-15 bfgs and they are about 27.1" tall. I will have to replace the rear tires as well in the near future and would like the fronts and back made by the same guys. So let me hear some recommendations and what would look good and work, and it needs to be in a 15" wheel as I am not changing wheels.

I can't believe how limited the current tire selection is for 15" tires.
Here's a recent
CHARGER thread & Chris' selection is about as big as it gets.
I believe it's 245/60/15 front & 295/50/15 rear.
What's the size & offset of your rear wheels?

Maybe M/T Sportsman S/R 26X8.00R15LT or 26X10.00R15LT
Hoosier Pro Street Radials: 27x10.50R-15LT 26.5 diameter tire actually.
HANKOOK TIRE VENTUS H101 265/50/15:

Rear wheels are 15x10 with 5" backspace and the fronts 15x8 with a 4.5 backspace. I was just checking out the Mickey Thompson website and looking at the sportsman s/r radials. They seem to have some sizes that will replace my discontinued tires well. Here are my current tire specs and what they have avaiable.
Front
BFG 265-50-15 25.5 Height/8.6 Tread Width/10.9 Section Width
MT S/R 26x10x15 26.1 Height/8.8 Tread Width/10.3 Section Width
Rear
BFG 305-50-15 27.1 Height/10.3 Tread Width/12.1 Section Width
MT S/R 28X12X15 28.0 Height/10.4 Tread Width/12.1 Section Width

This was just asked recently, and again, didn't Rick Ehrenberg have some odd 285/50/15 Pirellis on the front ov his 69 Runner? on 15x8 supercoupe rims i think...??? Those tires are most definitely not available anymore, just commenting on what might fit.
You try a 295/50/15...??? Those are still available new. Dont assume the really wide stuff wont fit, try it. You never know.
Also, if you like the 265/275/50 sizes, look for old stock. I'm always surprised at whats floating around out there on Ebay or wherever. I've seen new tires in models discontinued before your 265's were. Hell, found a set ov brand new 265 and 305 Euro T/A's a couple years ago... and those were done when? in the 90's...???
Its worth the effort. Wide tires up front rule. And 245/255's are NOT wide.

Tirerack.com lists a Firehawk and a BFG in 255/60-15. It's a 27" tire so make sure it will fit when you turn.
It's pretty close in size to the 245/45-18 I run on the hot rod. That is definately the largest tire that will fit under an early B.

I don't think a drag radial will have the sidewall strength to handle a heavy B flying through an enthusiastic off ramp.

LOTS of room with a 255 / 60R15 BFG T/A. '68 GTX.
