22" radiator support + 440 = I need a radiator, help!!! - 10/03/08 06:45 AM

Ok, I'm restoring/building a 69 charger. It was originally a 318 car. Now it has a 440. When I bought it, it had the 22 inch radiator, and would get hot if you stopped in traffic for any lenght of time, especially if it was a hot day.

The bodywork is done, and the car is currently being painted, including the radiator support. Repalcing/changing the support is not an option for me at this point.

I am running a stock style clutch fan, and want to use a shroud, thus it would be better to have something with near stock dimensions so that a stock shroud will fit.

Where can I get a 3 or 4 core copper 22 inch radiator that will "bolt in"?

Or, are there other options? $500.00 plus is not an option either, I just chucked over $20,000 into body/paint. I'm basically broke, and I'm deploying overseas sometime after new years. I really want to get this car to the point that I can at least take it for one drive before I park it in the garage until 2010! (yeah, I know, it sucks!)

I'm not sure what the cost was when I put a 22" big block radiator in my 440-6 cuda, but I got it from US Radiators in California. It will have the mounting for the fan shroud and by all means use one. My car runs very cool.

If you're looking for a $200 fix, I'm not sure that's going to happen.

If your looking to just drive the car then put a shroud on the one you have, it will make a world of difference.

hi,
I run a 500ci in my 68 superbee.
i also use the 22in rad.
i had a new core put into the the rad which had more cores in it.
I also use a shroud.

Unforunately, I no longer have the original 22 inch radiator. I sold it to a memebr of my car club to put in his dart.

I had intended to just buy a "stock" 26 inch radiator, but didn't realise the mounting probelms I would have until recently. (yeah, it's my first mopar, first old car period!)

The thing is, everyone I call wants to sell me a racing aluminum radiator, usually for almost $500.00. When I ask, "and your sure it will fit", they reply with, "well there's always some fabrication...".

I don't want any fabrication, and am hoping a copper core will be cheaper than an aluminum.

I bought a stock style 4 core non-aluminum radiator that bolted right in.

Let be honest, shall we? You say your deploying after the new year. Your project will be put on hold while your gone, right?
Why not just plan on and save your "Hostile fire" pay along with the tax free that you'll get for being in the AOR and either get a recore job or buy what you want with that $$$!
Studying your PME so you can get promoted wouldn't hurt either.

On my 70 Bee I put a 26" radiator right in place where my 22" used to be. Car was originally a 383 car, put a 440 in it and things started to heat up and not run cool.
I bolted it in with out replacing the larger raditor core support. Drilled new holes and ran a shroud. Runs cool as can be now. Find a nice stock 26" radiator from a junk yard and have it checked out, recore it if you need to. You will probably have $300 to $400 in it going this route.

I put in an aluminum 22" AFCO rad and it cools great, even without a shroud. Was not a stock bolt-in, I did have to drill holes for it, but I got it off ebay for about a hundred bucks brand new. Even sitting in traffic on a hot day it doesn't heat, so for now I see no reason to add a shroud. I run a 4 blade fixed fan. I'm sure someone makes a good stock style 22" rad, but will be more pricey than a universal aluminum.

I went the same route as BADBEE did. Drilled two holes in the passenger side radiator support and put like 3/8 shims between radiator and support on that side. Used stock holes on drivers side. Works great.

Well, firstly, as I said, I want to drive the car before I leave.

Secondly, if you mean Area Of Responsibility, then yes, I'll get "Hostile fire". Unfortunately, my original "estimate" from the body shop was $10,000 to $12,000. I took $20,000 out of my civilian "thrift savings plan" as a loan to cover the body work, engine and transmission. As I stated, the body work total is over $20,000 now. I have $5,000 in the engine, and another $1,500 in the tranny. I had to take out another loan against my wife's car to cover it! Thus any "Hostile fire" pay (and any other extra pay) is already spoken for to pay back the loans.

I had to Google PME. From what I gather it's an Air Force officer thing. I am neither Air Force, nor an officer. I am however a full time D.O.D. civilian during the week. I'm just fine where I'm at, thanks.

Actually, I contacted USRadiator. They have what I am looking for, bolt in, copper, for $367.50. That's probably my best option, unless anyone has the same for less.

Did you use a shroud? If so, did it line up with the engine? I've heard that getting it to line up that way can be a pain.

Yes you are correct. A stock 1970 26" shroud would not fit, badly out of center on the stock fan blade. I went thru my pile of shrouds and got lucky and found one that worked. I think it was from an F-body. It fit like a glove and looks great.
Oh yeah, I did have to shim the drivers side of the radiatorto the rad support as General68 mentioned.

I've got the #35455 from US Radiator (22" for RB) in my Duster w/440. In summer weather I can't keep it in the 180-195 range like I'd like. I guess it depends on how you define "hot" coolant temps and what you're comfortable with. Tried a new clutch fan and repro shroud to no avail along with a high flow stat and water wetter. Pushes 210+. The repro Mopar shroud does not fit the radiator correctly. In fact, when it gets warm it droops into the fan! Ended up taking it off and trying a Derale electric fan. Results about the same. Now that the weather has cooled here it is better but I need a long-term solution so I'll be considering an aluminum unit. Food for thought.

I had mine re-cored at the local rad shop with a high density 3 row core (core came from Spectra IIRC) for less than $250 but that was 2 years ago. 493 in a C-body with a 4 blade fan and no shroud it never goes over 180 if you're moving but it will creep up at idle. It hasn't been an issue but a 7 blade clutch with a shroud is on the list.

I run the us radiators 22" in mine also. no shroud. 190-195 in traffic.
I would like a shroud. ho has them?

I bought the aluminum 22" rad that mancini sells. It's a direct replacement and I bought the shroud to go with it. I used a solid drive 6 blade flexilite fan with a shroud. It sits in front of a 600HP Hemi. Hottest it got was 190 during a hot, humid day. I tried a clutch fan (you have to use the 96 Jaguar clutch as the Mancini rad is thicker than stock), but it would heat up idling and would have a hard time recovering.

I bought an aluminum A body radiator from a guy in california last week for $209.00

The fit was really really close, but not close enough for my restoration. It may work out for you
guys need to get rid of the heat more than my 340 need to.

This is the correct answer. Drill 2 holes and bolt the 26" radiator in. You can even buy an aluminum e-bay bolt in radiator for about $200

If you have an auto trans, make sure whatever you get has a trans cooler built in. If not, that's more $$ you have to spend buying an external trans cooler.

I run a 66-69 B-body 26" radiator with 66-69 B-body 26" shroud from Year One. Shroud # FD603. 440 with 7 blade clutch fan. Lined up perfect!
