rack and pinion?

I am putting a rack and pinion on my 72 dart.

do the arms of the steering need to be straight with the main body of the rack? Or can they be alittle angled/

I believe straight as poss. I know that the little pivot sockets (inside the boots) have to be the same width as the lower control pivot... bad bump steer without that being the same..
