cam recommendations for stage 6 heads - 09/09/11 03:05 AM

Just need some advice.....got a set of stage VI max wedge style mopar heads for a song.....from a friend, going on my 440. 3.55 gear, 2200 stall speed convertor. Currently have a 484 lift,252 duration cam. Anyone know if this might be a decent combo or do I spend the bucks on different cam ? Thanks

Stage 6 heads gain flow with lift well beyond .5" lift. If the cam you have is 252@.050 it has very slow ramps and limited lift. Not a good match.

I would suggest you check out Hughes cams on their website as a start. They are fast rate of lift cams to help you get the benefit of the good breathing heads. I would pick a solid flat tappet to match your desired RPM range and application. Is it street, street strip or drag? They also have hydraulics if that is what you want.

I had a custom grind cam speced out for my 493 by Dwayne Porter as it uses Indy EZ heads with Max Wedge ports. Course I race it every now and then but I love the solid flat tappet cam he speced out for me. Its a good bit of cam (264 & 270 @ .050 and .630 lift) but it really drives nice with my Dynamic 9.5 converter and 4.30's. But he can spec out a nice cam for your combo. I told him I wanted a cam for power and that I like a nice rump rump in my idle. I believe he could spec a much better cam then an off the shelf cam. Ron

Any port work done on the Stage 6 heads? Out of the box, they most likely do not flow what you think.

Don't get me wrong, they are nice heads, but not without some proper attention.

I'm running ported Stage VI heads w/ a 588 solid roller, 6-pack, 3800 stall and 3.91's It screams. One thing to watch out for is if you are going to use roller rockers you are might need to "massage" the vavle covers to fit. The ports are raised on these heads and you valve train will "hang" over top of the ridge.

Not to change the subject, but do I spy Crane rocker adjusters? Being aware of your previous luck with engine problems, I'd hate to see a post about one of those failing. Your car is running strong and I want to keep on reading about good news.

We automatically replace the adjusters with Smith Bros. pieces no matter how old or new the Crane adjusters may be...cheap insurance I guess. Don't ask me how I know.

Ahh...now that I stop to look at the shape of the rocker instead of the color, it's pretty obvious, huh?

I guess that light anodizing made me think Crane Golds at first glance. We've never had issues with Harland Sharps over the years.
