10-W30

So I've been looking over the old posts and still
am trying to see what guys are running for oil.

Have a fairly new 340 motor and need to choose an
oil. Tried 10-40 but my pressures are kind of high.
Running 80psi cold and 60 hot at idle to 1800 rpm.

Was thinking about changing to 10-30 to help bring the pressure down a little. Don't plan on racing this much just some street fun and I live in the north lands where it rarely reaches 90 degrees.

Looks like 10-30 was a suggested stock weight.

Yes I plan on adding ZDDP to the oil.

Chevron still makes a Delo 10-30 in CI formulation. A very good dino oil.

Valvoline Racing VR1 10W-30 has ZDDP and that's what I use in my 360 with a Comp XE flat tappet cam.....no problems after about 2000 hard driven street miles

So I gather you are using 10-30 with success. I believe the old rule of like 10-15 psi per 1000 rpm is true, is that correct?

I was planning on just running a valvoline 10-30 since I have a few cans of eastwoods ZDDP additive
as a gift to use up.

Again, my question was really only about the oil weight. I wanted to bring the pressure down, so I
was thinking of 10-30 instead of 10-40.

I dont want to go to zinc land again.

Please do tell, I must be missing something. Is this good oil for flat tappet guys???

WITH a can (just one) of ZDDP it will be just fine. Without it its a crap-shoot.

That's my understanding but I'm not a chemist so I
can't say with certainty.

What is ZDDP? Can someone let me know?
Thanks

Basically it's zinc. You can search the old posts here and read a long long thread on it.

Government is taking zinc out of most oils. Old cars
with flat tappets among other things and theory suggests it is needed. Kind of like the lead in gas before hardened seats etc.

The other day there was a post that a guy didn't want to run light oil in his early rebuilt engine and wanted to run 15/50 or 20/50. Not a racing build either.
Never did get a good reasoning to this.
The OEM recommendations of the day was a good 10/30 oil and in was not uncommon to see 100,000 mile engines. If you are running stock valve springs with relatively light rates I don't think that the zinc content is that big a deal either. It is with higher spring rates and fast rate cams that these thing multiply to disaster.

Well I have to agree. I don't think the zinc will
hurt at all. My engine was built for racing but it will not see it other than some street back road fun. I just wanted to bring the pressure down some
so a lighter oil (like stock 10-30) seems like a
good choice. This could go on forever about synthetics and zinc and what momma used to do, but
my old E body has 118000 Original, never rebuilt miles on her and she still runs real strong. I had to run 40 weight in her to get the pressure up as
she's a little long in the tooth like me.

Well, all I’m going to say is a look back into my latest posts will show my humble opinion on this topic. I’ll just add, what if 118k is just a drop in the pan when using new technology oils compared to the dino oils of old...
