70 Challenger wiring problems

I have no power to my coil from my ignition(new)& no head lights. I found the dimmer switch wire appears to have heated up & melted plastic plug on one wire only
every time I turn my head light switch on the wiring harness to altenator starts to smoke

any help would be good

could it be caused by bad dimmer switch?

I would pop open the bulkhead connector and see if you have some fused lines in there.

so I've been restoring an A body that had a ton of
electrical problems. Anything you can think of.
The headlight switch pigtail plastic was all melted.
same with a few others.

What you have to understand is anything that gets power draws current. Current creates heat. If your lights are only getting say 10 volts instead of 12 they will try to draw more current which makes more heat. Generally this is due to loose connections or a bad contact. My amp gauge was smoking and it simply needed to be tightened. I repaired my headlight switch using new female spades and hot melted them in place so they would not push back when installed on the switch.

Check your connections and you will find the faulty one.

I have pulled the bulkhead connections apart & there is no burn spots & I even pulled the bulkhead away from the firewall & unwrapped some of the wiring harness @ the welded link & all wires look good all under dash the is no appearent hot spots other than the connection @ dimmer switch
