single field to double field alternator. - 08/14/11 01:46 PM

Can I simply get a waffle alternator and add the additional green wire. Then buy the double field regulator? 'original' Blue and 'new' green get soldered to new style connector and black wire on Single field regulator goes to third pin on new style connector?
Is that all it would take? single pulley 45 amp single field alternators are not easy to find. Not to mention; I am running Electric fuel pump, electric fans and a high output electronic ignition on a '68 Cuda

Extend/Run the orig blue (ign1) wire to either alt field terminal & T into it back at the firewall & run that to the top terminal of the flat VR triangle w it facing up like a pyramid. then run the orig green wire from the other alt field terminal to the side terminal in the VR triangle. You can trim the sides of a flat VR & it will nestle neatly into the squarish firewall recess where the "box" VR once resided. clean the back a bit for a good VR to firewall ground & you're set EDIT I think there's a listing for a 70's or 80's M body that has an 78 amp alt. If you want to retain the single pulley an alt shop can switch them or slightly adj the spacing on the double pulley one to line it up

From the archives... about 3/4 of the way down is a diagram.

Thanks All. I tried searching and came up blank.
then I found this http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/Electrical/charging.htm
Is it true the archives only go back 1 year? I have some good info from this site saved in my favorites but now when I click on them .. they don't exist.

With the kind of electrical load you're showing there, I'd do more than just an alternator upgrade. Even a 78 amp dual field alternator will be too much for the stock wiring harness and ammeter. You'll want to do a MAD Electrical style bypass with some 10 gauge or better yet 8 gauge wire from the alternator to the starter relay. ( http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/amp-gauges.shtml )

IMHO, do the bypass and install one of these babys:

12SI delco...get one of these in 94A...I did some really easy bracket modifications to install it. I have the 78 amp version and my volt meter is so rock solid you'd be amazed. No dimming at idle with everything on (I don't have an electric fuel pump or fan). I used a 78 amp mopar alternator before and it was great as long as it was above idle...but at idle, it was bad.
