I have been wanting to do this, too!
Since I stripped one of my bolts and tapped it to the next size.
I don't want to remove the yolk, cuz I'm still using the 489 housing with the crush sleeve.
Saving up for a Dana.

My RoadRunner is done this way. Some one had stripped it out so it has the ubolts that go thru it with the nuts on the back. You would just need to drill a size are two bigger than the bolts. I haven't had any trouble with it done this way. Good Luck Ronnie

The factory bolts are 1/4" fine thread, you'll have to go at least 5/16" for the u-bolts.

Is it possible to drill them while the yolk is still attached under the car?

we bought a bolt and girdle kit (both ends) from summit
for the Rampage.

look at the back side of the yoke.
the small joint yoke
there is not much room
for a nut to fit
they hit the radius of the OD of the yoke

Has anybody drilled out the yolk for this conversion?
Would like to start this project as soon as someone chimes in.
Thanks,
John

I have the yokes from my Imp rears. They take U bouls instead of the straps. The U bolts are avaliable at any good parts store.Advanced had them for mine. The girdles can be a major problem.Ive heard of quite a few binding. My son bought a set and they are still in the garage somewhere after 10 years.Rocky

We have drilled out the yokes for years. Drill the 4 holes out to 1/4" and get some 1/4" fine thread grade 8 allen head cap screws with a lock washer and nut on the back side. They are 2 1/4" long if I remember correct (measure yours to be sure). The allen head is easier to work with for tightening. Use your straps over and it's a pretty cheap upgrade. We have always added a drop of blue or red loctite for extra insurance since we like to "enjoy" our cars at times... You can drill the yoke while on the car, just put the car on jack stands and you can turn the yoke to the bottom for easier drilling.

Unfortunately, no U-bolts will fit a 7260 or 7290 yoke.

Also, I don't recommend the Moroso U-joint girdles because they are too bulky and often catch on the driveshaft.

Is the weak point on the OE straps the straps themselves or the mini bolts that secure them? If it's the bolts then I'd do Bob Fromm's allen head bolt mod
