440 rebuild and dyno

440 rebuild and dyno - 07/28/11 07:18 PM

Okay, this post is both a "does this sound right" and a "would you change anything else" post.

I have a rebuilt 440 fresh
10:1
509 cam
.10 under forged crank
906 heads (all the standard upgrades)
headers
stock intake
Holley 750

The dyno pulled 503hp and 484tq

Needless to say I was very happy with these numbers, my only question is would you change the intake for an RPM or save the money and leave it alone since it is obviously making good power?

Thanks,

looks about right to me, now go post this is the race section "$$for$$ post or BB vs SB. Had a dude tell me 500 using staock parts wasn't possible.
Now go run the snot out of it.

P.S. yes change the intake. You could save some cash by buying a used SD or like. Probably pick up some HP as well. What covert and gears?

Wow I'm surprised you made over 500 with a stock intake. Did you do any port work?

yea after market intake and slap a demon double pumper on her with a good ignition and watch her scream

Well, changing the intake is worth around 25 hp I think I'd stay stock. That kind of hp #s and a stock 4bl intake can fool alot of people. Sounds fun fun fun too me.

I know. It was not my intake, but it was stock, I cannot say that it was not modified or not.

I was that dude - and if you think that the 509 cam made 125 more horses then a stock 440 +4 ( 375 horse ) .... well I cant wait to see what it runs at the track.. imagine if he put a cam from the 1990's in there???

Not all dyno's read the same number

The the OP - Nice build, but I bet if it goes on a different dyno it reads a different number. Have fun with your motor and good luck.

I know man, just goofing around ya know. I'm guessing he might have more compression than he thinks with those #'s...maybe they are flip flopped? 504 torque and 484 HP?

I had the same combo except I used a Holley Street Dominator intake. Ran 12.2s all day in my 70 bee. Great cheap combo.

You're definitely doing something right. I have a very similar rebuild and used Indy Heads/intake and the dyno read: 493 HP 518 ft/lb of torque. You did a GREAT JOB!!

HA... I remember you from Carlisle 2006. I loved you Barracuda!

I hung out with the boys from the Coronet Registry.

Anyway, someone brought up a great point... the compression is likely higher than anticipated since the heads were milled to ensure clean deck. Not that raises it a lot but every bit changes compression.

Again I am no expert, just talking it through.

Re: 440 rebuild and dyno - 07/28/11 10:02 PM

I too did a similar rebuild in a 67 Coronet R/T.509/292 purple shaft, 3200 converter,3.91 gears,manual shift auto,TM7 intake,750 Holley dbl pumper,ported iron heads using the mopar performance templates,clutch fan,solid motor mts.Hooker super comp headers 1 3/4 tubes,& S/S springs.

Low 12's thru Walker Race Magnum mufflers that dumped in front of the axle. I ran Milan Dragway all day long on street radials that I couldn't hook.Wish I would have uncorked the pipes, and put on a set of slicks!! yahoooo!! Loved the combo.I am planning on doing another.Fast machine & cheap money. Enjoy! HR20.

The strange thing is the tq not hitting the 500 mark before the hp did.

Re: 440 rebuild and dyno - 07/28/11 10:08 PM

That combo is what i tell everyone to build for a true milder 440 screamer, Its old school & tried & true, remember back in the day when the Chargers/Coronets/RRs with 440s were tearing up the streets, that was the combo, but they ran a SD & 850dp., 3800 converter & 3.91/4.10 gears.

Buddy of mine had a 68 Charger with the old shool 446 & mildly ported 906 heads, ran 3.23 gears & a 3000 stall, the engine was set up to run a 38-4200 stall & 4.10 gears, he never installed them, Car ran 12.3s @ 109 with a set of slicks & un-corked exhaust on its 1st. & only pass with no other tuneing.

I'd ditch the stock intake for a SD, keep the 750 if its a DPer for now. If you can bang the gears with stickies, car should run mid 12s all day long if not better.
