Longer lasting roller cam distributor drive gears? - 07/27/11 10:08 PM

Does anyone know if there are any longer lasting roller cam drive gears out there? I'm doing a solid roller 340 street motor and i have heard the bronze/aluminum gears for the billet steel cams only last from 2000-4000 miles. I know there are polymer and melonized gears for the GM and Ferd motors.

my SB roller cam has the iron gear pressed on to it to run a stock itermed shaft

been in since 07 as a daily driver with the lunati voodoo roller cam

Hmm, i can tell that this is a one piece billet cam. Yours must be a two piece cam.

maybe not all sb cams are like mine,but IIRC it is billet with a cast iron gear pressed/pined on it.

how could that be if the bearing journal is larger?

how do you tell if ones going? ive had mine in for about 4k, and it just seems down on power. havent checked timing yet, though.

IIRc,the rear end of the cam shaft has a smaller journal than the rest,the iron gear slides over it and is pressed on its journal and the bearing journal in front of it is bigger..ect..

the BB cam journal is to big to press the gear over and they all need the bronze gear as it is an all billet cam.

I could deff see 2 diff colors of metal on my roller cam and could see it was pressed on like they said.

for a piece of mind,i used the drive gear from a stock sb roller cam engine, which stock cams have the gear pressed on also.

I have one on the shelf and will look it over again

you will have to it for wear if your talking the drive gear or cam gear

I wonder how i can tell if mine is that way, its an older crane solid roller that has been reground by comp.

a re-grind would do nothing to the gear

check with crane and see what they say,dont recall crane sb roller cams needing the bronze either.

on my lunati it was a light color and the gear was a dark color and kinda had the blueing look from heat treating maybe

might try posting this on the race board also,much more roller guys over there for sure

I see what the stock cam looks

The roller I just got from Lunati is the same - kinda has me curious - can't se why the gear would need any different treatment than the lobes !!

the iron gear pressed on plays nice with the drive gear

the cam core is billet steel and much harder,will eat the billet/iron gears up in short order.

hence the bronze gear for the BB,it takes the wear and is replaced more often.

the lobes and rollers are billet steel and do well with each other as far as hardness.

I am no guru but this is what I found doing my research for my sb roller cam swap.

what spring do you have for your lunati?

the lunati springs are doubles and need machine work,i went with the comp 901-16 spring and droped them on and swaped the cam with heads on.

the comps drop on and use stock seals and retainers, are with-in 10# of the spring rate of the lunatis and no valve float at 6200 rpm.

I used 5 lunati sb cams with the comp springs now,they work great

had a set of the lunati double springs for a door stop for a while was the only down side on my research

Stock cams do not have the gear pressed on,it's a 1pc cast core. The billet 2pc crane cores a easy to spot, copper between the lobes but not the rear gear/journal area which is not machined,but cast,with a large pin in the end of the bearing journal. Crane is back and has the 2pc cores. If this is a weekend toy/bracket racer just use the cam you have and check the drive gear every year. Some last for years and I'd avoid Comp cams for this item.

Poly gears are available for small block Chrysler. One of the NASCAR engine builders has them.

I don't know about the small blocks with roller cams, but when I pulled my 451 "B" block apart, that had a solid roller cam, the bronze gear on the oil pump/dist drive looked fine and it had at least 20,000 miles on it.

OEM hydraulic roller cams use a steel dist drive gear....I can't remember if my OEM roller cam had a separate pressed on gear or not, or if the core is cast...

I am running a locking collar on my distributor shaft to help keep not only the timing steady, but also to keep the bronze gear down where it's suppossed to be, in the hopes it will lengthen it's life.

I'm wondering if having the indermediate shaft and gear cryogenically treated will help it last longer.
