4.7 swap into 77 dodge truck Thoughts? - 07/26/11 07:07 AM

I have a complete 03 4.7 durango 2wd that was rolled, and was thinking about putting it into a 77 dodge short box project that I have. Am I just dreaming or nuts? I want to do something different, I really wanted to go with a 4cyl cummins but, I have a low mile 4.7

I'd say go for it. Gas prices are killing my travel budget and the 4.7 is supposed to be quite thrifty, not to mention lightweight. I think it's too bad that the 4.7 hasn't had the development that the Hemis and Mags have had.
I take it this is more of a run-around truck?

I LOVE the 4.7 in my 2002 Ram. Wish there was more aftermarket support too. If you have the entire powertrain nad all the wiring and computer I say go for it!!! Its a good running strong engine.

You might want to get with someone very familiar with how Chrysler's computers are integrated in that truck, some of them are real tricky,

Our 2001 Grand Cherokee 2wd is a 4.7 It is hands down the best street engine I have ever had--STRONG from a stoplight--excellent throttle response and perfect power curve and...21 MPG on a trip --never any worse than 19 no matter what--have never towed with it but just love the total package--have about 140K on it and so far so good. I would love one in an older 60's model Dart or Valiant--may do it one day

Its a complete running 70,000 mile durango,,,just was rolled on its side in a snow storm. (not by me) My wife has bad back problems and cant get into or out of my plymouth so I want to fix the 77 to look like a little red express, with some kind of powered seats for her. I figure if I put the 4.7 in it, she may even beable to drive it.

I cant find any info yet on wirring yet. Any sugestions?

go for it I was thinking of doing the same in a dodge colt. I got a 03 dakota quad 4.7 5spd it rips the gears and if you get the chip re-programmer it makes a good sat night brawler.

I love my 4.7 Durango. It amazes me that it has so much power in a 4500 LB. vehicle. Here are a couple of places that have 4.7 performance add
ons.

I think the drill is you start with the complete harness and computer and work from there. Every sensor needs to be in place for it to run stock. At this point you don't need to worry about performance enhancements. I believe that also means you need the cat converter and the O2 sensor downstream of the cat to run stock. There was a board member yesterday who was posting about trying to sell midified harnesses and claimed to have done an OBDII transplant.

Dude - that's going to be a tough convertion. I'm converting a 1975 Trail Duster to a 1993 360 MPI out of a 1993 Ram Charger. I am upgrading 18 years and staying withing the same body style. I solved my electrical by switching out dashes.

Here is all the stuff I swapped over to make it work - gas tank, fuel lines, all electrical (still needing modification, exhaust, dash, heater, wiper motor, brake booster, steering box, radiator and so on.

Good luck

How about re-bodying the Durango as a truck instead?

I had a 4.7 in a Jeep and think it was a great engine... a good match for the Jeep and should be a good match for a short box pickup in terms of power, torque and economy.

It will be a bit of a science project to get the wiring, sensors and computer (including electronically controlled transmission) switched over to the truck.

If this is impractical, consider parting out the Durango and use the funds for a "high efficiency" rebuild of the engine you have. Spend a little extra time/money to dial in the quench on rebuild of your old engine, set the compression ration up accordingly and pick the cam amd carb carefully and you could probably make a big gain in mileage.

My opinion. The 4.7 is a very good engine and can be in high demand because there do not seem to be as many of them produced as 5.2 and 5.9 magnum engines. Depending on whether cost is an issue or not, but you might be lucky and find that a running 4.7 engine would bring a good price on something like craigslist. It is definitely do able.

Look for an a service manual, and in the back they have a system wiring diagram that would be your best friend on how to do the wiring. The dash cluster, etc, is not needed to make this work. Just need the right fuel psi, PCM (without security), and probably a manual trans PCM would be preferred.

Good luck with the project!

You are going to need a rear axle with a tone ring and pickup mounting for the sensor, probably will need to use the durango rear end, or newer pick up.
The sensor is a must have for the tranny and engine computer to work.

I think it will be fine without. You may need to send it to B&G for flash, but there are easier ways to do this, IMO. Swapping the axle and tone wheel are NOT essential to do this engine swap.

yea,,,I thought about the rear diff,,, figured it was the least of my problems. One from a 93 will fit right in and I have one, I think it would work. but again its the least of my problems
