Fan CFM Requirements?

Fan CFM Requirements? - 07/26/11 02:07 AM

I know there are TON of variables,but what is the rule of thumb for CFM of fans to HP its trying to cool?
I.E. 450 HP needs 3,300CFM etc........
May need to get electric fans for my street toy and only want to do it once.

One of my cars dyno'd at 480 HP at the rear wheels. It has a stock looking copper radiator from US Radiator with a stock shroud and fan. I have driven it about 8,000 miles in the past few years. I have been driving it around in the 100 degree plus heat the last few days for several hours and it has always worked great.

That sounds easy enough,but there isn`t room for a stock clutch-fan,only a thin flex-fan.

DEPENDS on the condition of the motor and the quality of the rad .... PLUS whether you use the fan as a puller(best way) or pusher.

Want to do it once? Then who cares about a formula for CFM? Buy the highest capacity you can fit.

As far as I know Zirgo has the highest CFM ratings thru out all the size range. You have to determine whether you can/want to fit 12, 14 or 16 inch. Zirgo has a powerful pusher in each size.

And don't forget that you need a charging system to support those fans.

Would a stock fixed blade fan fit? With a proper shroud they cool better than anything else out there.

Ok,I`ll bite.
Copper = radiator or penny
Thermal = underwear in Ohio
180 Superstat = Keeps score at the ballgame
Green = is a color

Care to elaborate?

That's his standard answer to any cooling system post he sees. I've waiting for him to snap and start posting that on suspension and interior topics too.

He firmly believes that a copper/brass radiator with green coolant running through a 180 degree susperstat being blown on by a thermal fan is the solution to ANY heating problem to ANY vehicle in the known universe.

Little does he know, that stuff doesn't always cure every problem.
It was NOT an option on my hot rod. Once you modify a car you may not be able to use factory parts.
