heli coil insert tool needed?

heli coil insert tool needed? - 07/12/11 12:53 PM

Do you need the heli coil insert tool to insert the coil or can you just use a bolt screwed into it (the insert) and then break the tang off later with a screwdriver? gets pricey buying all the insert tools and surprisingly all the parts store near me do not have them on hand in store and i want to get this done.

Need the tool , it has a hook of sorts on the end to grab the insert. check a local true value store for the kit.

you could try to grind that "hook" into the end of the bolt to make a tool.

if you just run a bolt down to the tang,it will bend/break it off when the insert tighten up in the threded hole.

Has anybody figured out how to break off the tang in a through hole so that it doesn't fall down inside the engine?

Is there a separate insert tool for each size insert? will the insert tool in the 5/16-18 kit only insert those inserts?

Yes use grease on the end of your punch.
The 2 auto parts stores I buy from has them in stock hanging on the wall.

insert tool can be the same bolt size you'll use but with end steped cut.

the imposible to find unless you get the kit is the thread cutter for the helicoil, since they are non commercial sizes and made just for this purpouse

Is there any way to remove the helicoil after it is installed?

Yes , you need a sharp pointed pick to bend the top of the coil out far enough to grab it with pliers then you can sort of unwind it, done it many times .

yes, pick at the top end of coil, grab with pliers and pull/unwind it out of the hole.

sometimes if the hole is loose it will turn back out picking at the end and turning it.

like you would a broken bolt to back it out.

faster to just pull it out and spin a new one in

i do most of my alum intakes befor ever running it,cab studs are a good place to start on an alum intake,IMO

Try these and you will never use a heli-coil again.

I used those to fix an exhaust bolt hole on a 360, it came out.

Actually the tap is a standard however not what you have in your toolshed. It's called an STI (standard thread insert or something like that) tap. You could probably buy it online.

When I stripped an exhaust hole in an aluminum head I looked at the possibilities and to me the HeliCoil was the best because it required drilling out less material.

I find my HeliCoils on the 'bay. Sure a lot less than the local parts store.

I bought a whole kit that came in a custom box that has like 4 or 5 sizes in it. At the time when I was pricing them, it was cheaper in a kit.

Have had them now for a long time, don't even remember where I got them now.
But it has paid for it's self many times over.
