Hood adjustment on 69 Dart

Hood adjustment on 69 Dart - 07/11/11 12:42 AM

I have checked the archives but was unable to find anything on hood adjustment. I have been able to get the hood to fit good all the way around except in the the back where it sticks up about a 1/2" above the cowl. It seems no matter what I do I cannot get it down. What am I doing wrong. Thanks Bob

The hood hinges on 67 and later a-body cars mount on two fixed studs in front of the door jamb so you really can't adjust them up or down.

Once they start staying up like that it's usually time for a rebuild. If you let it go the hinges will start bowing outward and will rub the paint off the inside of the fenders.

Resto Rick, a Moparts board sponsor, is a good guy to send your hinges to for a rebuild.

Unless the hood was somehow damaged, there is usually plenty of range built in to get the hood aligned right.
The slots in the hinge allow fore and aft adjustment as well as some for up and down. I suppose that you could elongate the slot to get more range. Maybe you could go to a local car show and belly up to a participant to get a few tips. Being in person may make things much clearer.

this is something best done with a helper or two. My guess is that loosening the rear 4 bolts and having two helpers shift the hood into proper position, then retighten while they hold it still.

REAR 4 bolts?
There are only 4 bolts holding the hood on...total.
Maybe if the rear 2 bolts are loosened and a helper tries to raise the hood, this will allow the rear edge of the hood to move closer to the hinge, which equates to it sitting lower when at rest.

Thanks for the info guys. I think you may be right Neil. I noticed that the hinges are bowing outward when you lower the hood and it seems a little more difficult to lower than it was a few years back when I disassembled the car to restore. Looks like I will need to restore the hinges. Thanks again Bob

Until you rebuild the hinges, try spraying the hinges really good with penetrating oil. I mean really hose it down and work the hood up and down to get any grit out of the hinges. Helped out on mine big time. Mine opens and closes like butter now and the hinges don't bow nearly as much.

Thanks scamper340, I will try that today and see if it helps. It would make things a whole lot easier. Bob
