Essentially stock 383. What carb do you like best for power/fuel mileage balance, 650 Thunder Series or 670 Avenger?

Go with the Holley, I've run 2 Avengers on 2 different motors, very tunable, responsive, trouble free carbs,....the EDDY is best left in the junk pile, because it will end up there sooner or later

I have never had any trouble with the old Carter carbs wich is basically what an edelbeock is, (although there was a bad batch of the Eddy 750's)I can not guess why so many folks say they are junk.
It all really depends on what you like, set up right they are both good carbs. Many prefer the thermoquad for street cars. I would say either would work for your application.

Im running Holley's on both these cars 670 on the RR 383 and 770 on the charger 440 both 4 speed car too. LOVE them! Will never go back to the Eddy carbs.

Whichever carb you're familiar with is best. Either is a good carb and can be tuned. I personally am more familiar with Holleys and would go that route. But if I had a Carter/Edelbrock expert in the neighborhood I'd go that way.

If you do go Edelbrock use the Thunder series (AVS) as you should be able to go up a carb size as the Air Valve will feed the carb the air it requires.

probably got part of the bad batch..as to why people think they are junk...mine runs ok but seems like the fuel goes out of it a LOT quicker than say a Holley...with the Holley after leaving it sit for longer it was easier to start a holley after sitting 1.5-2 weeks than the Eddie after it sat for 4 days....

the eddy does not run out of fuel any faster then a holley...it is just that an eddy acelerator pump well does not feed from the bottom of the bowl like a holley does...therefor the holley seems to keep gas longer...it is just that the holley acelerator pump still pumps gas because it is a bottom feeder while the eddy goes dry cause the well is located somewhat off the bottom of the bowl.

Must of been quite a huge "batch"......I've been tossing those Eddies since the mid 90's to present off customers, and friends cars,......while the old Carter AFB/AVS were great carbs, the Eddy can't compare, from casting flash floating around in the carbs, to just poor castings, poor machining, assembly, etc,....the Eddys are just pure headaches for reliability,....performance wise they just don't compare to a Holley,.. I've reworked/machined a few Eddys, the amount of work needed to bring them up to a box stock Holley isn't worth it IMHO..

good explanation..I just know while the Eddie seems to run fine for a "driver" It sure is harder to start(killing the battery quicker) than a Holley after sitting for a while..I could let the holley sit a week hit the gas a couple times and it would start up...let the Eddie sit 4-5 days and its like trying to crank it over for the first time after sitting all winter/ Thanks for clearing it up.

I like holleys, more tunable and better performance. But for a stockish 383 an eddy would be fine but I'd use the 750 or 800 thunder.

I've run AVS's on almost everything I've ever built (Small blocks, Big Blocks, even an old 2.2 4cyl that I wanted to see if I could run with one) and never had any issues with them.
The trick is to get yourself a REAL Carter AVS.
Pick one up off of eBay, Craigslist, or swap meet. With a 383, get one that originally was on a 440 for a little extra CFM.
The currently 'Thunder Series' Eddy AVS has a tuning kit available that is completely compatible with the old AVS's. And rebuild kits are available nearly anywhere (Rock Auto, Napa, Pep Boys, Advanced Auto, Etc.)
I've heard good and bad about the Eddy version, but the cost is what keeps me from buying one and trying it.
$ for $ though I find it hard to justify the added complexity in both the Carb and the tuning of a Holley. Not when I can swap rods out of a AVS in under 2 minutes. And with no gaskets below fuel level, you will never have the issues with fuel leaks like I've seen in soooooo many Holleys. I can pull the top and have the jets swapped inside of 10 minutes- on the car, and you adjust the air door of the AVS secondaries with a pair of screwdrivers! Just a much much simpler carb to deal with.

I'm sure many people have had great success with Holleys as well. So really it comes down to what you know and how much you are willing to learn.
Presonally, I'm looking to put a Predator P6000XI on my next project.
One Biiiiiggggg venturi. Great carb if you have the hood clearance.

Just my pennies,
CC.

Fixed!

After many attempts at trying to like Holley carbs, I'm an AFB guy. They're very simple and work great. I like the ease of tuning without dumping fuel everywhere too.
I had a carbed car that had to be smogged. I tuned it for performance with the AFB. When it came time to run it on the sniffer I pulled the air cleaner and replaced the metering rods. The tune was changed in less than one minute and it didn't require spilling gas.

I am running a 650 on a 318. I am thinking you need a bigger Holley or Eddie for your engine for optimum performance. There are calculators around to help you out on what you need.
One is here: http://www.4secondsflat.com/Carb_CFM_Calculator.html
