alternative to TTI headers

alternative to TTI headers - 06/21/11 08:18 PM

Are there decent alternative headers to use that would cost a good deal less? I know that you always get what you pay for however I'm looking to upgrade and from what I have now, basically anything would be an upgrade. I have the most baseline Hedman uncoated headers and really the only thing I don't like is how the steering link goes behind the driver's side header. This part of the header always bottoms out over certain driveways and parking lots. It's the part closest to the ground and right at the bend of the header.

I'm thinking I could find another cheaper brand that would go behind the steering link so the dragging would stop. I just haven't found any for small block b-body yet.

Thanks

OK so the only place I see that have the headers I need are TTI's. I guess I need to just break down and get a pair of these. Any suggestions on where to shop for price and customer service?

Thanks

i don't think there are any real price breaks on the parts but sometimes you can get a break on shipping charges. i have tti stuff on both my cars and yes it is pricey. if its any consolation the exhaust sytems i've used; 2" headers and full 3" exhaust on my 65 coronet, complete 2 1/2" system for cast manifolds on my 69 coronet r/t; fit like a glove and have given many years of good service. tti does supply hook-ups for other brand headers to their exhaust pipes, if your looking for a full system with cheaper headers.

You're already gonna spend a ton, so get the coated/polished. They are nice and cool and have been trouble free for 8 years on my B Body. Don't buy directly from TTI.

I may be off the mark here, but whats the chance that an A body small block header would fit the B chassis? Maybe try posting in the Race section. Those guys over there are a pretty crafty breed.
Good luck.

Looking at the photos on the SuperComps and they look to be the same (in terms of the steering link going behind the headers). I could be wrong on that but that's the way they look. Also, if I'm gonna spend that much for the SuperComps then I don't mind to spend a couple hundred more for the TTI's. I like the idea of the thermal barrier built in for the cooler temps under the hood, etc.

So any suggestions on who else sells the TTI's?

Just curious Gus but what are the Doug headers going for now ? I can tell you I paid $691. for my 2" TTI's that I just bought them with the nickel finish. So far they are holding up good and I really like them as they are a very nice header. Thanks , Ron

i wouldnt give you .50 cents for hooker,s thermal coating its a hit and miss at best
i paid a good chunk of money for the ones on my 340 thinking well wont rust and when i bought them said had a lifetime warrenty
after 6 months (i had drove it bout 50 miles) they had flakes of the coating coming off
i was fixing to take the motor out to paint the car
call hooker and make them redo my headers, they do
get car all back togeather 6 months later they look worse then the first time
was at a show hooker had a tent so told them the deal, replyed hooker has never had any kind of warranty im like yes you do ya just redid them!
he replys oh we only redo them one time! as im walking off someone walked up and was complaining of same thing
i could of saved several hundred by buying some at a yard sell
tti makes a great header and most fit perfict but yes some have had clearance them (dimpel) for700.00 you can have some custom made on the car you know fit

Another vote for Doug's. I don't remember the exact amount off the top of my head, but I remember they were around $500 for my 'cuda.

Ron I paid $560.00 out the door a few years back and other than the Firecore wires and distributor on the new stroker,it's the best money I spent

Re: alternative to TTI headers - 06/23/11 01:32 PM

I paid too much for my TTI's some years ago, my friend purchased Doug's last year for his 65 and they are a better bargain, fit is the same but a bunch more affordable. For what it's worth, I ordered my TTI's direct and specified a 4-speed application with Lakewood housing and although they fit, it is VERY close to the ear of the Lakewood on the right side, I don't know if the Doug's offer more room in that area or not.

ProMax in Indy is a TTI dealer, and a sponsor here on Moparts. I know he is planning on attending Carlisle All Chrysler Nationals in PA. He would likely deliver them there for you.

may not be what youre looking for , mine are a stahl weld up kit,
400$ to the door, little work ,welding , but they are a better fit than anything you buy, you can make them a slip tube, get them in long or short collector no extra charge, just welding if you get the right setup from them they are realy more easier than you think to put together mine was allready banded together
but i wasnt paying 800$ for a set of headers that dont fit
