How to remove clutch from RV-2 style A/C compressor? - 06/15/11 01:16 PM
Is the clutch pressed on like a harmonic balancer, or should it come off when you remove the one bolt in the center?

most I've seen there is a 5/16" bolt ( 1/2" hex head ) holding the clutch on.
Remove said bolt and then the clutch is threaded.
I think the threads are something like 5/8"
Just thread the large bolt in and it pulls the clutch off

Head to the hardware store and get a bolt (I'll need to get the size and thread pitch, sorry
) and grind the tip like this:

Then with the 1/2" hex head (3/8" bolt dia.?) retaining bolt and washer removed install the larger bolt, hold the clutch and thread in and the larger bolt will push the clutch off of the taper.

on my 74 ( earliers too ) the clutch its pressed in to the bearing, inside the pulley.
the 1/2" hex head bolt in the middle just holds the complete clutch/pulley assembly into the tappered crank shaft
I remember have seen a thread somewhere around though, but had to remmove it with a press. Long time I did that!
Note, my assembly is with the smaller diameter pulley, not the big pulley like 60s models. Maybe there is the difference

The clutch hub or flywheel has only a few threads in it for the puller and they can appear to make the hub look as if it is threaded onto the crankshaft end (see attachment) but I pretty sure they were all on a taper, at least all of the Mopar A/C RV-2 pumps I've seen so far.

Ive removed quite a few using my deadblow hammer.I just remove the center nut then tap around the backside of the clutch.Ive never had one that wouldnt come off with some light tapping. One from my Imp sat for probally 10 years in the garage.A few taps and it slid off.Rocky

What's a good way to hold the clutch from turning without damaging it while trying to pull it off using this method?

Just went out and did it with my impact wrench - worked like a charm!
