Newbie Help With Speedometer - 06/13/11 07:25 PM
Hi guys, just bought a 1971 Challenger, the speedo isn't working, could anyone give me a step by step guide of how I can diagnose the problem ? I assume the dials and dash need to come out? Please could you tell me how to remove the dash and dials to get to the cable, thanks a lot for any help

pull the cable from the back of the gauge, and drive the car. (you should be able to go under the dash, and squeeze the clip at the back of the speedo, releasing the cable) is the end of the shaft turning? if not, pull it from the trans housing, and hold one end of the cable, and twist the other. if it spins, check the clocking of the drive, and make sure the gears not broken/missing in the trans. if it doesnt spin, you need a cable. if all of this works, make sure the cable is plugged in, and properly seated in the speedo gauge. if it doesnt work now, the gauge is likely bad. this all should take about 15 minutes, and a set of ramps, or jacks and jackstands, to access the side of the trans.

Just an easier way to check.Jack up car.Put stands under rear end.Have someone start car after you disconnect speedo from trans.See if gear in trans spins while in gear. Then attach drill to speedo cable and spin it from under car.Have someone watch speedo to see if it registers.Easier than trying to fight under the dash.I cant remember if the drill has to spin CW or CCW.Getting old.Rocky
