My 518 trans - 06/10/11 02:27 PM

Well I traded a few things for a 518 W/lock up converter, and the elect's. to the lock up. Want to put it in my Duster. But not sure about it. I know it's going to be a bear to get in the trans tunnel area. Another thing is I don't think it has the bosses for my floor shift bracket. But I think I can make something work. I'm running around 500 HP, but I hear theirs a few thing out there to beef a 518 up now. Anybody done this, or know a few things about it?
Thanks
Oh, I've tried to contact Erinburg (I know, "spelling"!) but no reply, I guess he's a real busy man.

Do a google search here. There are a number of posts on doing the swap.

Re: My 518 trans - 06/10/11 10:01 PM

I have a customer that has a 1972 Plymouth Duster, he wanted an over drive, so I searched the internet for someone that did the conversion, but I couldn't find anyone that had done it in an A-Body. I put the customers Duster up on my lift and I took all the measurements and pinion angle etc. and then I removed the stock driveshaft, 727 transmission and I have a friend that owns a Transmission shop and he emptyed out an A-518 transmission for me so it would be liter and I put it up on my transmission jack and , found what I had to do.
After reading the articles on the guys that did the A518's into B &E bodys...they all cut the floor pans and in order to fit the transmission and Bleave it or not, I gutted the interior, and scrapped off the indercoating underneith the car and heated up a couple areas and made hemisperical pockets for clearance. The hardest to make was the custom made crossmember and I also had to remove the center section of the torsin bar crossmember and I replaced it with a heady duty piece of plate steel bent to fit the floor hump and I welded it to each side of the torsin bar crossmember. The customer also wanted to retain the factory automatic on the floor console, so I had to make my own linkage/shaft that goes through the floor. I also had a Non-lockup A 518 , and I custom made a switch that looks factiory and put it in the console . It works great!...I will try and attache a few pictures.

I've got a 518 in my M behind a mild 360. Plans are to build a roller 408 out of the '91 360 block I have. Currently the only trick thing the 518 has is a shift kit and external cooler. I'll be watching this thread.

Thanks Gary. That looks good. I was hoping I wouldn't have to hack anything up to much, after all it is a "true" 340 car. I think I'll save the trans for a P/U project I want to do. Shouldn't have to do much to a P/U to get it in there!
I hope!!

I did the 518 swap in a 74 D100 with no major work other than driveshaft shortening and crossmember adaptation.

Now that sounds like my cup of tea! I just got to fine a cool '72 up P/U to wrap around my 518!
