383 and 22" radiator....

I'm doing a 318 => 383 swap on my Satellite. The original 22" radiator worked great on the 318. Can I re-use this radiator with the bigger, yet very mild, 383?

Yes.worst case is you will need to have it recored with an extra row or 2 inside.depends what you have now.That combo could come from the factory that way.

been running the 22 for years with no major issues. Just the smae basics:

-Clutch fan
-Shroud
-50/50 antifreeze w/ a bottle of water wetter
-good overflow setup
-And I have had good luck with a 160 stat but the 180 should be good too.

Doesn't the outlet (top) on a BB radiator go on a different side than the SB?

You're gonna need a big block radiator. In and out are on opposite sides. Good news is that they bolt up the same.

What if I use a "universal upper hose"....wouldn't that fix the SB/BB radiator configuration problem? Or does it have to do with flow direction?

I have a 22" Big Block radiator. It's been a while since I compared it to a small block 22 incher. If I recall correctly, the inlet on the Big Block unit is bigger. Thus, Big Block radiator, Small Block radiator, two different part numbers.

Yes, you can use a 22" rad on a 383 - matter of fact, my 70 Challenger R/T came from the factory that way. It did not have a/c or many other options so that is what it called for.

On a side note, you will need a new radiator anyways as the inlets and outlets are reversed big block to small block.

Put a 4 core 26" and be done with it. Overkill. It's a good feeling. They are only about Eleven Hundred $.

maybe...it depends on the routing. Do you have AC? if not it may work okay. I ran a flex on mine for years...it looked like snot...but it worked.

BTW - you can get a 22" 3-core Aluminum big block radiator from Champion Cooling for less than $250 including delivery. I am a distributor for them now and can hook you up if you'd like.

Later model BB waterpump housings are pass. side inlet. I've got one in my B'cuda.

Sorry guys, but if it is a 66-69 radiator the upper connection is in the same place. The lower is a little too far inboard and needs to be moved out to the and of the tank. It is also a 1 1/2" connection which needs to be made into a 1 3/4" conncetion at the time of the move. It my or may not cool though. Should go to a 3-row core when the swapping is done but it's your cash. Call me if you have any other questions.

I'm sending my 22" Big Block radiator to Bob at Glen-ray Radiators, nice craftsmanship and they know their OE Mopar radiators.

Also for FWIW, my father tried a freshly redone 26" two core small block radiator in a mild street 383, it overheated.

Just saying, don't waste your time on a small block radiator in a big block application whether it be a 22"-or-26"

I don't know what the differences are between a SB and BB 22" rad but you certainly don't need a 26" rad; waste of time and money.

My #'s 440-6 car has the factory 22" rad because it doesn't have the following;

- A/C (N/A with N96, 440-6 or Hemi)
- Trailer towing package (N/A 225,440-6 or Hemi)
- Axle Package (mandatory with 4spd and 440-4, 440-6 or Hemi).

The 22" rad is standard for all Mopar engines except the Hemi which automatically mandated the max cooling option.

99% of all cooling problems have nothing to do with the size of the radiator; clean block, clean rad, proper water pump. proper fan, fan shroud, operational thermostat, spring in the lower hose to prevent collapse under suction pressure, etc. etc.

Is your car an A12 car? I thought all those came with a max-cooling 26"?

No, mine is a '70. You're correct; all A12's came with a 26" rad, but not because of the 440-6, but because of the 4:10 Dana Axle Package.
