SIX PACK CARBS- NEED ADVISE ON PARTS?

SIX PACK CARBS- NEED ADVISE ON PARTS? - 06/02/11 02:32 PM

OK gang I need some advise. I have a 440 six pack in my Cuda thats been sitting for years. The carbs are leaking out of the gasket noted in the pics below on one of the outboard carbs and from under the the center carb at the power valve( I think).

In any case, I need to clean them up and replace the gasket in question and while I am in there I guess the power valve too.

I attemoted to take the carbs to the local auto parts places but they do not stock them and seemed lost in looking for the parts.

So my question is, can I buy just the parts needed, if so, who sells them at a decent price, or do I have to buy total rebuild kits to get the parts I need?

if so, are these the 3-396 kits and any idea if the power valve is included or what the part number is for the valve?

This is a newer set of carb that I bought during the build, maybe 10 years ago or a bit longer, not old original carbs.

I need to get then quick and get this thing up and running.

thanks for any advise in advance.

Dave
need the right pic.

I'm sure Summit will have everything you need to rebuild them. Not much to it, except instead of one carb you have to do 3.

You need bowl gaskets and a power valve , any performance shop should have them. Is there a SPEED SHOP in your area ? Otherwise it's Jegs or Summit if ordering online .

Summit in an hour and a half away in Reno, but I guess I will have to go on line and check it out and order it today to have it for my next weekend.

any idea of the part number. when I search bowl gasket, there is a ton. when i ad six pack or chrysler, nothing.

No clue, you need to use the part number off the carbs , if summit is that close I would just order the kits as I think you are going to need the metering block gasket also to change the PV so it's bettr to have all the gaskets and go thru the entire carb. Have them shipped , if they are coming out of Reno you'll have them the next day and that will be cheaper than the gas you use to drive there .

just get the entire kit. No need for next day. It will get there by Monday latest. I'd bet if you ordered now it'd be there Sat.

Thats the issue I had at the parts store. They checked all the numbers off of the carbs and they could not determine which parts I needed. any idea what number I need to use. I am no carb rebuild expert, so maybe I just need to send them out to be rebuilt before I ruin them. I am no good with small parts, cant feel the ends of my finger tips due to several surgeries and I tend to loose small stuff.
what I thought was going to be an easy fix is turning into a P.I.A.

I found this thread during a google search, this is what gave me the 3-396 number.
https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=4572020&Main=4569194

and if its the 3-396, what so many parts, gaskets ect in one kit. will one kit do all three carbs or do I need three kits. It looks like the power valve is in the kit to or a couple of them.

The reason there are so many parts is because the kit applies to many different models of Holley 2300 2 bbl carbs. center and end 6pk carbs and even the different year 6pk carbs don't use all the same gaskets. You will have a bunch of stuff left over when you are done.

Disregard the fact that Summit, Jegs and Holley now say that this is for Marine carbs. I don't know where that came from. 3-396 is the correct kit for 6pks.

Thanks, I ordered that kit off of ebay. Hope its a good seller. If I bought three kits from summit it would be 30-40 more with shipping.

thanks for the help. Now I guess I am going to learn how to rebuild these carbs, any advise there or links to threads.

The carbs were new, I put maybe 15 miles on the car, gas went bad and now this. So all in all, not much use on the carbs at all. They are on my cuda vert, which I am now going to get runing and drive it till it falls apart.

Re: SIX PACK CARBS- NEED ADVISE ON PARTS? - 06/02/11 03:38 PM

They are actually very simple. Just pick out the gaskets that match the ones in your carbs. Since you are not familiar with the parts I would suggest doing one carb at a time so that you don't mix up any parts between the center and end carbs.

This might help http://wwnboa.org/h2300r.htm

Too late now but the kits are actually cheaper on Amazon. They are 26.89 ea with free shipping vs $75 + $12 shipping for three kits on ebay.

Re: SIX PACK CARBS- NEED ADVISE ON PARTS? - 06/02/11 04:52 PM

Individual Holley gasket numbers for the late model 2300 series carbs. I've seen a few of these at my local Schucks/O'reilly's from time to time but would rather order on-line, just too easy.
Bowl gasket (outboards, pkg. of 2) #108-90-2
Metering block gasket (center carb, pkg. of 2) #108-89-2
Bowl gasket (center carb, pkg of 2) #108-83-2
Screw gaskets (pkg of 20) #108-2-20
#65 Power valve #125-165

Corrected!

change every number 180 above to 108 so that it will work.
Go to summit and send all those numbers to your cart and then have it calculate the shipping and guess what? Total = $73.17. I think the kits are a far better deal as they come with all of those parts plus all the rest that you need to do a complete rebuild plus left over parts for future use.

I just ordered the 396's from Mancinis. Around $35 each. Just pay attention to what gaskets come off the carb. They do include the standard 6.5 power valve in the kit.

Corvette Central has them. All the gaskets are the same for them. I have a bunch of baseplate gaskets. The metering plate gaskets are easy to get as well as the bowl gaskets. You can buy these by the pack of 5. I have some of the diaphrams too. They're not hard to do.

This board member sells any part you need for a six pack setup and also sells several custom parts for six pack carbs. I was very pleased with a rebuild job they did for a set of six pack carbs I have.

Once you get the carbs done.....and tuned.... are you going to pre-lube that motor or do anything else to it before you fire it up?

Re: SIX PACK CARBS- NEED ADVISE ON PARTS? - 06/15/11 05:34 PM

OK, I have rebuilt my six pack set up and reinstalled everything to start turing the carbs in.

Now, no leaks, except for the front fuel line fitting. Have installed it and reinstalled it four times and for some reason, its leaking out of the fitting. It seens there is little or no play or room for error with these fittings. I dont know if something got tweeked or what but its now leaking and I need to get moving on so I am again stuck looking for parts. I dont need a whole kit, which is 60-75 bucks, just the piece pictured below.

does anyone sell it seperately? Or does someone sell a kit that may work better. Its 5/16 fuel line, are all kits the same or do they make something thats better than the stock kit?

any suggestions. This seems to be my last leaking issue as the rest seems tight.

OK, so when I get the leak fixed whats the best way to adjust and tune the carbs now that they are all rebuilt and out of wack with one another?

Thanks for any advise!

I guess you should start by turning the mixture screws all the way in then back out 1 turn. Un-hook the outboards and start the car, let it warm up then turn the idle up to about 2400rpm UNHOOK your vac advance and set you timing. I'd start at 36* total. Then back the rpms down to about 900 and turn the mixture screws out until you get the best vaccum reading. Then hook up the outboards. If it starts to race adjust them so the doors are shut. Go for a spin. Depending on your cam and set-up you might need to adjust the outboard springs and/or PV.
