10-40 or 20-50 depending on how your pressure is. Use zinc additive or high zinc racing oil like he said

I had 20w50 in my 493, Valvoline VR1. I just changed the oil for summer and went to 10w30.
The oil pressure with the 20w50 was 45-50 at freeway speeds and now sits at 40 with the thinner oil. It still idles with 35 psi. I wouldn't go thinner than 10w30 unless you drive a lot in the colder weather. As stated before, be certain to use a high ZINC oil.

as thin of an oil that you can run while still maintaining good oil pressure. once it's good and broke in, a quality synthetic will be just fine.
add zinc too if you wish. how crazy is the cam? my dad has a small block with a pretty mild cam that uses softer spring rates on the valves, and he hasn't given a second thought to adding zinc, and has no problems. I think the zinc really becomes a factor when you get into big cams that need high spring pressures.

What about using shell Rotella T 15w40 diesel oil or better the Brad Penn 15w40, 20w50 weight oil.
