Starter bolt and stud specs??

Starter bolt and stud specs?? - 05/25/11 01:12 PM

I'm about to install a starter in my '96 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 and misplaced the OEM bolts during the engine swap. Does anyone know what length and thread size/pitch the top starter bolt is? Also, need to know what the thread pitch/size is for the fine threaded stud that is coming out of the transmission for the starter fastening nut. I suspect that these are SAE threaded fastners, but I'm not sure.

the top bolt is 7/16-14 pitch[can't remember the length, but is approximately 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 or so long]. the bottom stud is 7/16-20 pitch. hope this helps.

Thanks. That sounds about right - top bolt may be a bit longer than 1-1/2", but I can check that. I believe that they have used the same setup for the small/big block starter bolt/stud for the past 45 years (at least since the beginning of the Torqueflight transmission back in the mid '60's).

The top of the starter takes a 7/16"-14 X 1 1/2" bolt.

The stud is 7/16" X 2", 14 threads on the case end and 20 on the nut end.
