Have you encountered any problems with metal shavings in Mopar reblt. torque converters? I have worked at 4 different Mopar dealerships over the last 15 years. I had never seen or had techs that felt there was a problem with this part. However, at my current dealership over the last 3 years. The trans tech has blamed 5-6 failures on the converter. His position is the have metal cuttings coming out of them. Causing valve body failure. Wouldn't this cause a failure at the rear of the trans or at least some damage there. Before VB damage/failure? I'm taking a lot of heat from the trans tech and service manager for bad parts. Your experience and thought are appreciated. Jim

I have seen multiple re trans failures due to converter contaminatoin during the reman process or the hub on the converter mismachined and causing the front pump bushing to fail.

What i have ran into is if you take the pans off most mopar remans you will find some metal shavings in pan. If you have one that fails and you call powertrain usually they ask you if there is aluminum shavings in pan and if so its from reman converter.

well Jim I will tell you I have installed a LOT of Chrysler remans at the shop and have not had much in the way of unit failure I have seen a lot of so called builders blame EVERY problem on converters.
I am not saying you wont have a problem on occasion but if it is every time then I would question that.

I think when they improved the filter years ago, it reduced valvebody problems.Except when the metal drilled though the filter

I have installed many mopar reman converters and have seen my share of problems. Not only metal shavings, but blasting sand from the cleaning process that was not cleaned out. I Put one in an otherwise healthy trans and destroyed it before I could get out of the parking lot on a 46RH. Ended up rebuilding the trans and replacing the valve body and the governor assembly. I like to never got that sand out of it!

In 02-04 when I was working for "Cal Worthington and His Dog Spot" we had a rash of converter issues along with every other dealer. The problem had been going on even before that. Mopar finally figured out that the converters that fell into a certain production range, which is on the part number tag, were duds and caused MANY failures. The converters that fell into that production range were pulled off of the shelves and sent back to the PDC's as they were deffective from the get go. Of course they put dealers on restriction for trans work as it was the dealer causing the problem. Yeah, right. Mopar didn't want to take the hit on bad components. On the parts ordering screen, you could see what the weekly demand was for converters and O.H. packages at the local and national level. At that time, it was like almost 300 of each per week at the local level. That told me, a non college educated type, that this was not an isolated issue. It was a national problem with junky parts. Plus since I worked the back counter there and other dealers. I saw this stuff on a daily basis. This is why I chose a 6 speed in my 04.5 Cummins. Junky converters, poor shift point calibrations and lack of manufacture back up lead to many trans failures. By this subject, it looks like Ma Mopar is playing Egyptian again. You know, LIVING IN DENIAL! BTW, I see you are in Joplin, are you ok back there?

Thanks for your reply. These were not Mopar remfg trans. Just trans reblt using remfg converters. Yes I'm fine. But there is a whole lot of the city that will never be the same in my lifetime. Jim
