It's possible that it is an adjustment but usaully if it's shift linkage and you are locking it in 2 gears at once it wont move at all and create a nasty reaction. The shifter has a hole that you can put a drill bit or equivalent through and adjust the shift rods from there. Easiest way is to put the shifter in neutral, disconnect the shift rods at the shifter, make sure the shifter levels are lined up and slide the bit in the hole (it is at the top of the levers at the base of the shifter housing-visible in the attached photo). Then make sure that the trans is in neutral and adjust the rods where they slide freely in and out of the appropriate shifter level. Once everything feels good, remove the bit and shift it through the gears to make sure it feels good, then try it running without too many Rs just in case. If this doesn't do it get the builder to look at it in the car. If it's their problem they should round trip it for you.

Question is if the person building you a833 together did something wrong?

My :

Of course you should first make sure, linkage alignement is correct. If you're under the car and look at the linkage while someone puts reverse in (with engine off) you can see if the lever will move a good way (pointing backwards as it was pointing forwards before).

You can make sure if the lever at the tranny does not slip on the bolt that goes into the case. May be you will take the lever off for seeing if lever or bold are not "round". And of course make sure nut is tight.

As a last test before moving the transmission out of the car you can disconnect linkage and drive shaft (take care: a certain amount of oil will come out!) and move reverse lever by hand and feel with the other hand at the output shaft (moving forward and backwards) if reverse "goes in". May be you can feel it with drive shaft in place?

I recommend not to try to remove the side cover off the transmission while it is in the car - it would be very difficult to put it back with the forks in proper position.

Good point about the rear. If the pinion nut/front bearing is loose it will walk back and bind.

Get your builder involved, he should be the expert and he can see the car, we cant.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

if you bought this from Brewers...give him a call. They care about their customer service, and I'm sure he will be glad to talk this through with you, help you find out what is wrong and if it's on him, I know he'll take care of you.

Does your shifter have the bolts that limit the shifter throw? If so it is possible that the front in is in too far. JUst a thought.

I would think if the shift forks were mixed up or wrong you would have forward gear shifter bind problem, but of course Brewer know a WHOLE LOT more than me.

cant contact the owner that rebuilt the 4spd trans. hes an idiot.the prob is the shifter doesnt want to stay in reverse. it grinds and kicks out. it doesnt feel like its totally engaging..called brewers they said i installed linkage correctly. they were saying poss forks are mixed up inside or some chipped teeth on syncro.how sweet for me !!my motto get it right the 3rd time !!

If you're talking reverse, there is NO SYNCHRO! That's why you have to engage at a standstill. It does sound like broken/chipped teeth if it's locking up. It's pretty hard, if not impossible to install the reverse fork wrong.
