Sealant around engine block coolant neck?

Sealant around engine block coolant neck? - 05/19/11 03:14 PM

I've got some pitting on the coolant neck at the top of my engine block, and I want to avoid seeping coolant on my brand-new restoration.

Has anyone used sealant that works well other than RTV silicone? I don't want it to be totally stuck on if I have to replace it sometime, so I was thinking of the non-hardening intake manifold sealant.

Any recommendations are appreciated.
Thanks,

I had the same problem on the top of my intake and nothing I tried would seal it from seeping until I took a flat sharpening wet stone to the top of the intake to file down the pitting, then I used the red high temp RTV sealant at the bottom of the T stat housing gasket and have not seeped a drop since.
I use a billet steel housing, never chrome.

Some guys may have better solutions but that's what worked for me.

File and smooth as best possible and Permatex #1 (brown). It seems to work much better than RTV in this app.

What ahy sez: gotta have flush smooth surfaces, then the Permatex. I like anti-sieze or bolt-prep on the bolt threads, too. And test your thermostat in some boiling water with a thermometer before installing it.
