Dodge Ram B350. No second gear

Dodge Ram B350. No second gear - 05/16/11 11:02 PM

Dont know how this happend. Got the car 1 week ago. Try from stand still i first gear and try manualy to shift to second. It wont shift. Kickdown linkage is ok.
It shifts direktly from first to third gear.
What is wrong?? Do i nee to rebild the tranny??
Help.
Live in Norway with expensive parts.

Kickdown works fine when in third gear but it shifts all the way down to first gear and revs engine on limiter.
Servo broken?? is this innside tranny??

yes servo is in the front left corner of tranny with pan removed. Kickdown band is also visible in front with pan removed. Servo can be serviced without removing tranny , but if band is broke , tranny has to be removed.

Before you try to order parts you need to properly I.D.your trans. I highly doubt they put A-500's in a B350 series (1 ton) vehicle.

Yep definetly sounds like a front band (kickdown) problem and as was said if the band is broke the tranny has to come out. Ron

The sticker under the hood says A-500 (904 with overdrive) transmition.They put this trans in lite duty applications including vans with the smaler 5.2 v8 engine. Info on this is on www.allpar.com

I'm not sure where in Allpar you were referring to, but that doesn't matter anyways. And you mention they put the A-500 behind 5.2's in LITE DUTY applications - is a 1 ton van a lite duty application? While I like the 904/A-500 trans it has no business in a 1 ton van, no matter WHAT engine. That's why there were so many 727's in slant six trucks/vans/taxi's/ etc. That being said...

If you do not have 2nd gear the kickdown or front band has failed. Either the adjuster has backed out, the band strut has bent/broken or fallen out, the lever has broken (rare), the band has broken or is extremely worn, or there is a problem with the servo. Sometimes a hard downshift into 2nd can pop the strut out if the band is loose. A visual inspection of the adjusters, followed by dropping the pan should tell you what has failed. Band adjustment or the servo or the band strut can be fixed in the van; the trans has to come out if it's the band. As to cheap parts, I don't know sells trans parts cheap for mail order - the supplier I use doesn't have a website. Good luck with your repair.
