Difference between truck hemi and Charger hemi - 05/08/11 05:22 AM

I see that the truck hemi is rated at 390 hp, while the Charger hemi is rated at 370 hp. What is the difference, and why?

Okay.... I saw this post and figured that SOMEONE would chime in....
The truck engines had a LESS restrictive intake tract. THATS the reason that the dealers will likely tell you. I can't see 20 HP there though. I think that there is more to it than that. TRUCKS have a different set of emission standards than cars in many cases, and its quite possible that the additional HP could be the result of the preset tune in the computer. The cam and heads are likely the same.

Thanks Frankenduster, I appreciate the response. I thought this would begin a long thread of opinions/input.

I'm with you, I don't think that intake tract could be responsible for that much of a difference.

Is it true that a tune from a Diablosport tuner can free up more hp and fuel mileage?

Absolutely! Be prepared to run PREMIUM though.
Oddly, as I was looking over my owners manual for my 07 Ram 1500, there it was..."89 octane recommended, 87 is okay" What? Why the wishy-washy crap? I have ran 87,89 AND 91 and I can't tell ANY difference. Maybe if I was towing or something, but who knows. The SRT Challengers and Chargers probably REQUIRED 91 octane. My truck weighs 4940 lbs, so 1/4 mile blasts with it are NOT going to set the world on fire.

I'm not looking for or expecting neck snapping acceleration. I was just hoping to help it with the fuel mileage a bit. Mine's a 2011 Crew Cab 4X4. I love the power it has, and it does better on fuel than my 2007 Dakota QC 4X4 with the 4.7 HO. I was just hoping to improve it a bit more over the factory settings.

I put a K&N FIPK in my 07. I don't know if it helped power or mileage, but it sure is L O U D !!!

Mine has the dual rear exhaust. Sounds nice at idle, and also under acceleration. I must admit that I was a bit disappointed that Dodge didn't run true dual exhaust. Plenty of room under there for that. I can say that the pipe running from the y-pipe to the muffler is HUGE, like maybe 4 inches in diameter. But still, I think the truck would have benefitted from true dual exhaust.

So, the only tune available would necessitate running premium fuel?

Thats the consensus that I have heard. The LX guys have more info on this. There may be some "Tune" that allows 89 octane, but to understand why, you need to understand what the "tune" does: The factory preset fuel and spark curves are modified and altered. The spark advance may come in sooner (In rpms) and have much more advance than stock. Just with our old style cars, too much spark advance equals detonation. 100 octane fuel can cure that, right? The "tune" can add more duration to the fuel injectors which will help quell SOME of the detonation, but it can only go so far. It all comes down to the octane of the fuel.

Well, with the price of fuel nowadays, no way am I gonna tune it for a higher octane fuel for maybe a few more mpg's.
