Challenger hood adjustment help - with pic... - 05/07/11 11:39 PM

I removed the hood and fenders from my '70 Challenger this past winter to restore under the hood, rebuild the front suspension, and install the new engine. I've reinstalled everything and can't seem to get the hood to fit flush on the driver's side. I've adjusted the hinge up, down, tilted it forward and back, moved the hood forward and back, all to no avail. Anyone have any ideas???

If you push down on it when sticking up as pictured does it go down? If it doesn't look for some obstruction. If it does, some lube on the hinges may help. When they are stickey, they can hold the hood up.

If your hindges are reasonably tight, your problem can be solved by adjusting the three mounting bolts on the hindge. If I remember correctly you want to move the forward bolts up (esentially rotating around the back bolt). Adjusting the bolts is a counter-intuitive process, it works just opposite of what you think.

Good Luck.

I copied this from Resto Rick's website to post here...

I knew it before I saw his write up but he did an excellent write up & I don't have to type it...

A common alignment problem on E-body & 71-up B-bodies is with the rear hood edge being up too high with the hinges being adjusted all the way down on the inner fender.
This is an adjustment problem! Start by moving the hinge up on the inner fender. (yes, up!)
Then, loosen the 2 rear bolts and leave the front bolt snug. Now lift the hood to make the hinge rotate (as viewed from the side). Retighten the rear bolts and check the fit. This procedure will get that tail to come down. Adjust the front-to-rear dimension on the hood side bolts.
It can be frustrating and take some time, but these hoods will fit correctly! I’ve installed them with the hood sitting about 2 1/2" above the fender...using this method, the hood was fitting perfect in a few minutes!

I would also check to see if you had the correct spacers where they need to be under the fender bolts.
