setting distributor gear into big block

setting distributor gear into big block - 05/07/11 05:03 AM

Ok, so I installed the cam (474 purplshaft) and new double roller timing chain and gear set and had the bronze bushing pressed in for the distributor (1967 383) now my question is where does the rotor point to #1 at on the stock distributors? Also, my #1 piston is at top dead center, the timing chain is dot to dot right now is this when I drop the distributor gear in and make sure the keyway on the dist will line up and point to #1?

I read on hughes website that this will be 180 out and that I need to do all of this with BOTH dots at 12 o clock, not dot to dot like they are....

someone give me some advice here. First time playin with big block mopars other than building a stroker shortblock but I never put the cam or timing gear in it just put the rotator together for the guy....

Im changing to electronic dist but I know that doesnt matter...thanks in advance, no pun intended.

Well I just read something that answered my question Iam sure and looking down into the lifter bores right now I see the answer.

#6 is firing when the cam is dot to dot and #1 is firing when the cam gear is dot at noon.

Now I just need to know where the distributor #1 position is on the factory distributor.

You need to install the oil pump drive/distributor gear so that the slot on top faces toward the firewall AND radiator.

That is correct & if havent paste lubed the cam/lifter bottoms yet I'd turn it almost 1 turn (350 degrees actually, to 10 BTDC #1 firing) which would b 12 o'clock/12 o'clock & set the inter gear wherever it needs to b to put the rotor under the #1 wire terminal on the cap as the factory wiring diagram is the best (for standardization) & lets the wires nestle neatly and FYI some dists have a diff bottom tang end to top rotor phasing so start w the factory intergear slot location which I think is parallel front/rear & go from there to finalize the rotor location as it actually can b located anywhere to get the rotor clocked right as that's the bottom line. Turn the dist housing till the #1 cap terminal is over or near over the rotor AND the magnet is dead even w the nearest reluctor tooth AND the vac adv can is in it'd general factory area, snug the dist clamp somewhat/hookup the light & that part should b done & with that cam I might even start w 12 or 15 EDIT here's some ring breakin info for you, "break in secrets" at www.mototuneusa.com

'70 Plymouth FSM states the slot in the int shaft drive gear should be parallel with the crank when the piston is at TDC on firing #1 plug for V8.

Making sure that the number one piston is at TDC compression install the intermediate shaft so that the slot is parallel with the engine center line. Install the distributor and note where the rotor is pointing. Install the number one plug wire in the cap terminal where the rotor is pointing and follow the firing order around counter clockwise. This is for uniformity sake. In the real world it makes no difference where you install the slot or the distributor as long as you have the number one piston at TDC firing and install the number one plug wire in the cap in the corresponding cap terminal and follow the firing order around.
