Alternator gage wiring question - 05/04/11 11:58 PM

The two main wires on the back of my Alternator gauge ('71 340 Duster Ralley gauge set) are red and black. I've forgotten which way they go. The way I have them in the pic, or opposite (or does it matter?).
Here's pics.

Just hook them up and try it. If they are backwards the amp gauge will work backwords. In other words it will show discharge when it is charging and vise versa. If wrong just switch them. Ron

Everything is out of the car right now. Easy to get to. I don't want to have to go working under the dash after it's in. But thanks for the reply.
I'm going to go look for the "C" this morning. Thanks.

Thanks for your replys all.
But upon further review of the area, I have found that one of the studs has a big stamp (RED) in the circuit board just under the stud. This is the answer to the question. If you look at the pic you can see the "D" of the word "RED" in it.
Thanks again, carry on !

wooops, it could be a diff counterweight indexing inside the gauge than 3rd gen chargers.

I said initally the red to connect to the stud on C side ( charger ) of the gauge by what I checked on 3rd gen charger wiring diagrams, but as far the pics you have posted your gauge has the RED stud on to the Discharge side of the gauge. So I was wrong saying you what I said on this.

The ammeter has a counterweight inside moved magnetically with the load going through what moves the needle. So maybe the diff with my assembly is due the diff gauge design and counterweight location/indexing.

OK, Thank you. I think I got it right now though.
