What engine is in a 59 Fury

What engine is in a 59 Fury - 05/02/11 05:55 PM

At a local repair shop they had a 59 Fury convertible on the lift getting break work. I could only see the underside of a super original car and was wondering what might be powering it.
The engine is red with factory dual exhaust and is big block at least it has the oil filter in the front of the block. The transmission also looked unusual to me. It has a small fluid pan that is square. Any ideas on the engine and trans based on this?
Thanks

Being a higher-end model, the Fury was only available with V-8 power.

I believe they could have came with the odd-ball 383rb engine as well.

As stated above - Fury & Sport Fury were V8 only. & the /6 wasn't out yet.

Plymouth for '59:
230 cu.in. in-line 6 - 132hp
318 cu.in. 2bbl poly 8 - 230hp (STD in Fury)
318 cu.in. 4bbl poly 8 - 260hp (STD in Sport Fury)
361 cu.in. 4bbl "B-engine" 8 - 305hp

383 "RB-engine" was Chrysler ONLY

In the late 60s I bought a 59 Fury.It was an odd ball.Had a 350 3 speed manual with non power.Had to be a real early build.I did check the stamping on the block more than once.A friend bought it and the 47 Ford coupe I had for a build.Rocky

It probably is a 361, looks like a LB 383. If it has the 440 "step" accross from the dist. it is a RB 383. Although that motor was a higher end for Dodge and Desoto. The 350 was a 1958 motor, but it could of lasted into the early model year of 59. Chry. was trying to find its way once the HEMIs were dropped and all the changes that all the motor companies were fighting over with a downturn in the economy in 58 (recession).

My vote, site unseen, is that it's a 361

Odd-ball RB 383 was only available in the '59 Chrysler Saratoga and Windsor, so I doubt that's what's in the Fury.

Was the 383RB available in the Chrysler 300 in the early 60's? Guy I know just bought an early 60's 300 ans swears it has a 383 in it. When did the low block 383 debut?
