Carb Recommendation

Carb Recommendation - 04/27/11 04:02 PM

OK, I need a recommendation for a carb. This BG Speed Demon piece of junk is coming off. Something really wrong with it and I am tired of fooling with it. Can NOT get it to idle consistently on my car at all. Very, very rich no matter what I do. Also it appears that the base is not machined correcly because the transferslots are not uniform... Anyway, I am done with it.....

Here is my combo as it is now:
71 440
• Stock rods and crank
• TRW Forged Flattops; approx. 10:1 Static Compression ratio
• Out of the box Edelbrock RPM heads (84cc)
• Stock style rocker gear
• Comp XE285HL Cam, comp lifters, Stock Edelbrock Head Springs
• RPM Intake
• 750 Speed Demon Carb
• MP Electronic Ignition
• Doug’s 2” Full Length Headers
• 3” Magnaflow bullet mufflers out the side like a AAR currently, coming a 2 ½ “ X-pipe exhaust system. Current system way too loud.
• 833 4-speed
• 8 ¾” rear 3.91 sure grip
• 275/60-15 rear tires (28” tall)

Then only thing I may change would be the RPM intake to a SD to gain some hood clearance and depending on street manners once I get this thing to idle, I may go to just a little smaller cam something in the 230ish @ .050 range.

I am looking for a carb that will IDLE and be really close OOTB that will need only minor tweaking to make a good street carb. This is not a daily driver so choke is not important. Looks like most are running 850's on similar builds..... What are my choices. Proform, AED, Bigs, Holley HP....... I did notice that Summit Racing has the AED 850HO's on sale for $499. Is this a good carb? I sent BIGS a note and Jessee repied about a Stage 7 750 that would flow 855....

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

The AED in 750 or 850 would be fine.THat is a great price.I have an 850 that Jesse built also and it runs great.
PM me if you are interested.

I'd stay with a smaller venturi on an engine like that. The Holley 950HP would be a good choice or a 750 hi flow. An Edelbrock 800 AVS would also work just fine on there.

I called up Jeff at AED Performance and talked with him for a long time. Super nice guy. After getting all my specifics he recommended one of their 1000HO 4150 Carbs! Now before you react like I did with a over the 1000 number thing..... ha Let me tell you the rest of the story. It is a just a 850HO with an HP main body plus adjustable idle bleeds. This is suppose to Wet Flow 875. I asked about throtle response and if he was sure this was right for my intended use and setup and he was SURE I would be happy... So, There is one on the way. Found a killer deal online at $557 with free shipping. I guess we will see what happens!

You'll be better off with the 950 HO than the 1000 HO, especially if you put a smaller cam in it.
