Head gasket........ - 04/26/11 09:04 AM

I have a stock 383, Is a EX268 cam a trouble free upgrade? what would be the thinnest head gasket I could use to bring up the compression after installing this cam? without of course smacking the valves.......

Thanks

Describe a trouble free upgrade?

What does it have for pistons in it now? What heads do you have?

The XE grinds are known to be noisy because of the fast ramps , using them with stock stamped rockers makes it sound worse.

compression ?
John ask the question what pistons? I assume you have stock pistons with stock compression height, the valves wouldn't even be close to hitting with that cam. If you want more compression cut the heads. 20 steel head shim with copper coat. The trouble free part ? when you cut heads to build compression, push rods and adjustable rockers have to be looked at.

"Describe a trouble free upgrade?"

Is it pretty much plug and play?

"What does it have for pistons in it now?"

Stock.

"What heads do you have?"

Stock 906's

"The XE grinds are known to be noisy because of the fast ramps , using them with stock stamped rockers makes it sound worse"

Any recommendations for a rocker upgrade? a step up from stock is about as much as I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Do you know the thickness for stock head gaskets? my motor is a uncut orginal, I would like to keep like that as long as I can.

Thanks!

Stock steel gasket is .020 thick.

The Comp XE268H cam will work just fine in a stockish 383. Yes, you can hear it tapping away because of the fast ramp lobes, but it's no big deal. I ran the XE262H which is one step down from the 268, this was with stock heads and rockers and steel shim head gaskets. It was a tapper too, but I liked it. I now run a Hughes cam.

What type of exhaust/manifolds/headers, rear gears and transmission will you be running? That will make a difference on which cam is best to run.

Stock exhaust manifolds, stock 727, (I may go with a trans go kit) 323 gears, edelbrock 1407 carb (750 cfm)

The XE262H will have slightly more torque over the XE268H which will have slightly higher horse power over the 262. Personally I'd run the 262 with your combo. I ran the XE262H in my 383. It ran strong up to 5,700 RPM's. Slight noticeable idle. The 268 will work OK with high gears and low converter stall.

Do yourself a favor and lose that carb , you'll be happier in the long run , it's got a bad setup from ebrock and requires drilling of passages to fix it , if you are lucky .

I looked into the 3310, is 750 to much for my set-up?

Re: Head gasket........ - 04/27/11 11:51 PM

750 is fine. If you have a stock iron intake a Holley will require at least a 1/2" spacer to clear the intake.

If you want to keep it stockish looking buy a 650 Thunder series ebrock carb m, they don't have the same problems that 750 does .

Re: Head gasket........ - 04/28/11 12:15 AM

When I first got my Coronet it had a stock 383 out of a '71 Newport. It was a 4bbl and dual exhaust engine rated at 300hp and 410lbs of torq. Stock converter and 3.23 gears. I switched to the XE262H Comp cam, Weiand intake and ran the 600 Edelbrock with headers. Ran pretty good for what it was. I've done a bunch of changes since then.

So, if I were you, I'd run the XE262H with a 650 or 670 carb. That would make a nice driver with some fun. Run the steel shim gasket. They were used on our engines out of the factory.

Re: Head gasket........ - 04/28/11 08:49 AM

Anyone run a Holley 670 street avenger on a Ebrock performer RPM? Also, is it possible to do a accurate compression check with the motor out of the car by rotating the crank with a breaker bar? I forgot to do it before yanking the motor. (using the starter)

Information overload!

Re: Head gasket........ - 04/28/11 03:42 PM

I've ran 4 different carburetors on the Edelbrock Performer RPM with the XE262H cam, headers, 2500 stall converter and 3.73 rear grears. The Eddy 750, Eddy 650, Holley 670 and the best one, the 3310 Holley 750. I never could get the Eddy 750 tuned the way it should have performed. To me the 650 and the 670 were too small, not enough punch off the line and not enough top end. The 3310 Holley 750 was and is perfect.

I doubt you will get anywhere near enough rotation speed to get anything remotely accurate . I would do a leakdown test but even then a little heat in the engine before hand would have been nice.

Is the engine original or has it been rebuilt ?

When I put it up for the winter there was a tick from the motor, I thought I wiped a lobe. I yanked the motor and there is evidence of the motor having been apart. (newer gaskets etc.) So far I pulled intake and found no damage and it is really clean. I probably have a collasped lifter. I will be pulling the heads and pan soon so I will have more info soon.

Thanks John.

Keep in mind that with that little XE262H cam the Holley 750 worked so will for me was because of the headers, 2500 converter stall and the 3.73 gears. If you're gonna run stock manifolds, converter and 3.23 gears, the 3310 Holley 750 may not work as well as the 650 or 670 carbs. But, the 750 Holley is forgiving and can be tuned for so many different engine combos!

I didn't care and still don't care about gas mileage, only performance. Just saying.

Your questions are not dumb. EVERY ONE has to learn.

Did you rule out an EXHAUST LEAK ??? This can sound similar to a lifter tick .

Look at the manifolds closely , they are usually warped. Were there gaskets between the manifolds and the heads? Also you can have a leak at the heat riser that will tick .

I was only briefly able to check it out. There were gaskets, however when I pulled the passenger side 3 of the bolts were loose. (not the ones going into the water jacket)

3 of what bolts ? ALL the the exhaust holes on stock iron heads go into the coolant jacket.
