Will changing to front disc fix large cam on the street - 04/25/11 06:16 PM

E body with stock large drum power brakes, .270@50 cam, air cannister and even pumping, which seems to help, won't stop the beast worth a hill of beans.

I have a set of Discs I pulled many moons ago for a duster build, can't recall but I think I need to swap upper control arms for the swap? And will they probably make stopping better, the way she is it would roll thru a stoplight .....

Thanks

You don't need to change the control arms to do the swap on an E-body. Only on an a-body.

I swapped the drums to discs on my 71 Scamp, and it made a world of difference.

Do you have an auxillary vacuum cannister for the power brakes on your current setup?

Thanks

Yes, I picked up the black can from Summit a few years ago, but only got to drive the car 2 days ago..... my son has held the car hostage for the last few years...lol

The current brakes are the 13 x 3" drums... didn't find any help in the tech archeives.

So, all I need is to pull the drums and swap the rotors, or do I need to use the spindles from the disc setup? Sorry, been awhile since I worked on my old mopars...

Looks like I may need the d150 master ?

13x3? Are you sure they're not 11x3?

There are disc conversion kits that use your stock drum spindles, or you can swap to the factory 73-76 a-body (same as 73-74 e-body) spindles and use factory hardware. Some people have also used F-M-J body spindles with good results, though that discussion always turns into a

Yes, 11x3, been a few years..

My setup is the 73-76 A body, and I recall now pulling the a=arms and finding out later I didn't need them...now that you jar my memory.

Thanks, I'll go out and see what's in the "parts bin", I think I need a disc prop valve too?

Disc prop valve is needed, yes. Inline tube sells new, oem-style valves. I used the aluminum master cylinder that Rick Ehrenberg sells, and it worked great. I got rotors, loaded calipers, brake hoses, etc...from NAPA.

I'd suggest some agressive (non stock) pads and the correct bore dia M/C for your app which may not b the stock bore size.

I have a 440 in a 73 Dart.
It had front drums and manual brakes:: stopped fine
It now has front disks and manual brakes:: still stops fine.
Properly set up either MANUAL drums or disks will stop the car fine.
The disks seem to stop straighter from high speed but the drums were also fine.
The rear brakes are 11X2.5 from a lincoln towncar.
The rear brakes do not overbrake unless you have a true emergency stop.
It has the normal disk brake proportioning valve.
I am running a 1-1/16 manual master cyl.
