B-Body torsion bar help - 04/22/11 11:22 PM

Hello all!

Looking for a little help with the torsion bars that should be used in my '71 Charger.
Was original 318 and now 440 and need to upgrade the bars to sute the current combo.

Guess the question is what diameter are the big block bars supposed to be and what would be the number on them. Also would it be advisable/advantageous to go larger than the O.E.M. standard size and what should I look for?

Always appreciate the help!

The 7/8 were the top diameter back in the day (HEMIs etc.). I know that aftermarkets ones are even stiffer. They cost a couple hundred, and I would like to know if the one's over an inch are worth it.

I put the 1.03 bars from Just Suspension that were on sale for $199 in my b and e body cars and could not be happier! Thought it would have a rougher ride, that did not happen, but a huge improvement in handling and stability. Money well spent.

Too bad they are $350.00 at the big S
Budget is not in line with that unfortunately unless someone has a used pair they would like to part with

The big block 440 bars are .092 in diameter, Stamped ID NO. 780/781

Your stock 318 bars are .088 in diameter, with a Stamped ID NO.776/777

There was also a seperate bar for the lighter 383 BB Witch was .090 in diameter, stamped with ID NO. 778/779

As for your question of what bar to go with, it will depend on the overall front end weight change your actually going to have.

With my Abody 440 swap from its original 318. Im still using the 318 bars.

The 318 was loaded, Air conditioning/Power steering/Power brakes/Emissions crap.

VS none of the above with just a 440 with aluminum heads /intake and battery in the trunk.

Depending on the total swap perameters maybe the current 318 bars will be fine.

FWIW - my 72 charger, being an original 318 car, that the torsion bars that were the bars that the big block used, like 0.92" I believe.

If you are going to drive it to enjoy it, you will need bigger than92's and a bigger front sway bar and a rear sway bar added. Don't forget to replace the rear springs too. Most importantly the big front disc. are a must.

I have the Mopar 0.96" bars on my '71 Charger with a 400 stroked to 500", and the PST sway bars, rides much nicer than with the smaller 383 T-bars.

I put the 0.92 bars into my SB E-body, love the ride. I would suggest you go >1"

Here's some info for reference

Thanks again for ALL the replies
I had the .880 bars in there so anything larger will be an improvement

I'm looking @ going with the .960 Mopar Perf. bars unless there are issues with them quality wise.

This is a 46,000 mile driver with the original rear springs in excellent shape. I don't want to over spring the front and plan to add a front sway bar for roll resistance in the future.

No corner carving. Just looking for a good ride without plowing the front end turning a corner or getting on a highway ramp
