used plaz to cut exhaust bolts - 04/22/11 11:00 PM

on 98 Ram 1500 3.9 v6 2wd to replace clutch and now it wont start.... I'm 99.99999% (or better; checked 3 times), sure I re connected all the elec connections. There were 3; 2 O2 sensors and one connection to side of the transmission itself the Neg side of battery was disconnected during entire procedure including cutting bolts. I grounded to the exhaust itself if that matters. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Scott

it wont start, or it wont crank?

Cranks strong but no start. everything works (radio, seat belt warning sys, door locks etc) however, gauges don't work properly. When I turn the key to the run position, the gauges flicker but stay on the zero end i.e. gas gauge says empty even tho I know it has a quarter tank and amp gauge no volts etc... After the system check the only warning light that stays on is the seat belt light.

Another thought: As this is a hydraulically activated clutch, would there be any adjustment that would prevent starting? I notice one time trying to start it when it was in 1st gear, it tried to pull forward a little due to the new thicker clutch disc (my assumption). I just re installed the slave cylinder just like it came out but now with the fatter disc, could this be keeping it from starting? A sensor detecting clutch travel/clearance or lack there of?
Any input would be greatly appreciated

I would check for spark,is it possible you broke or pinched wires for crank sensor while putting trans back in? Crank sensor is located on back side of pass head between bellhousing and block.

Yeah, after further research, I realize what a silly question about clutch adjustment was My buddy that works in a truck accessories business welds and cuts on a lot of new trucks and said they have to be careful on Fords but all they do is disconnect the batt on Dodges and Chebbies. I did but only the ground. That said, I guess I'll get a good light source underneath and look more intently for broken wires

I have seen big voltage ie: welding and cutting ,etc take out the ecm on dodge trucks, ecm grounded to body grounded to engine etc It can send voltage through the ecm through the ground side. i would check it out, not that hard to get wires pinched between bell house and block either

Your friend has been very lucky.

Bleed it again, new slave PITA to bleed sometimes, clutch drag would indicate still air in the system. Netrual safety switch issues result in no cranking usually

I would take a good look at the crank sensor,if it cranks its not a neutral saftey switch problem.

Scott, can you can borrow a scan tool and plug into the truck.See if it will communicate with the ecm,if it does see if you get an rpm signal while cranking, this will tell you if the crank sensor is sending a signal. If the scanner doesn't communicate with the ecm you'll need to start looking into possibly wiring, power feed problems or maybe a smoked ecm.One quick check, does the check engine lite come on when you turn the key on? Found the problem. The crank sensor lead got pinched between bell housing and block.
Thanks again for help!
