1971 GTX Fender tag Question V7W and V8W Help! - 04/12/11 01:02 AM

I purchased a 1971 GTX last year that was original everything with two fender tags. It is red with white vinyl top and white interior it also has two codes on the fender tag that denote white striping. Can anyone please tell me what I should put back on the car. I can send the full fender tag info to anyone if you like. The two codes are V7W and V8W but the whole problem is that it is a N96 Air Grabber car. I know that the fender tags are the original tags and they are not fake. I can send pics to anyone that will help. The car is leaving the body shop in about three weeks and I just wanna get the car right with the correct striping. I have small parts of the build sheet but they are in a million pieces due to a rats nest being built in the seat. Please help its almost spring!

The V7W is the pin stripe. White in this case. All 71 GTXs came with the pin stripe, although most seem to be omitted during restoration.

The V8W and N96 are mutually exclusive on a 71 GTX. It's one or the other. That just doesn't add up.

Post the tag pic.

See the stripe info at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/dealerships/DealershipDataBook/1971/71_Satellite_33.jpg

S is Standard & E is extra cost. I do not see that either stripe has anything to do with the hood.

I see it now, black only, no white.

What is the code for the bumper / valance stripes?

V8W is a legitimate code as well as V8X and V8Y.

Here's a great site

71 Satellite stripes.

Barry. I think you are asking about M75. That's the code for the bumper/valence stripes. On a GTX, V8* is the fender/tank track stripe.

Are you thinking V8* striping was not available with N96? Is that what you are getting at?

The V8* stripe was not available with the N96 hood (on a GTX). If the fender tag has both codes, something is amiss.

Note that on a Roadrunner, the V8* stripe is the C-pillar stripe. You could get it with the Air Grabber.

I'll "assume" we are talking St. Louis assembled '71 GTXs

found another (color changed):
928-spd N96 V1X V7X V8X "sunroof"

Might just be a code quirk.

Bottom line though is that you can't have the stripe AND the Air Grabber. Well I guess you COULD, but it would sure look dorky.

Its at the body shop now and I get it back in two weeks- I know one is the white pin stripe but what is the other W code? Its an N96 should I just cut down the hood stripes and install what I have room for
Chris

No. No cars came like this from the factory. Leave off that stripe altogether.

As stated previously V7W is the pin stripes. All 71 GTXs had these.

V8W is the hood/fender stripe. Optional on 71 GTXs, not available with N96. Must be a fender tag glitch on your car, as well as some other 71 N96 cars.

V1W is the full vinyl roof. White in this case.

V6XW, should be P6XW, which is white bucket seat interior.

The V8W is some kind of misprint on the tag.
